BWW Review: FIDDLER ON THE ROOF at Rochester Broadway Theatre League

Fiddler on the Roof is one of the most iconic and memorable shows in the musical theatre cannon, having originated on Broadway over 50 years ago and seen scores of revivals, and a feature length film, in the intervening years. The production currently playing at Rochester's Auditorium Theatre until December 16th is a rich and powerful experience, unlike any production of Fiddler you've ever seen before.

The Cortland Repertory Theatre Youth Programs will host a Holiday Trivia Night today, December 13 starting at 7:00 PM. This fund raiser for CRT's Youth Programs will be held at CRT Downtown, 24 Port Watson Street, and will offer free snacks with a beer/wine cash bar.  Subject matters will focus on the holiday season with a few surprises mixed in.

The latest touring production enchanting audiences at the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse, New York is none other than Rodgers and Hammerstein's Tony Award-winning 1959 musical The Sound of Music. Purely breathtaking and nostalgic, it, of course, features favorite and familiar musical numbers such as "My Favorite Things," "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," "Edelweiss," and "The Sound of Music," just to name of few. Richard Rodgers (Music) and Oscar Hammerstein II's (Lyrics) score features some of the most gorgeous and emotional songs in musical theater history and they are very well performed in this production.

On Sunday, December 16 at 2:00 PM, CRT Downtown welcomes back the Traveling Lantern Theatre Company with THE STORY OF EBENEZER SCROOGE.  Held at CRT's downtown location at 24 Port Watson Street in Cortland, this interactive re-telling of the Christmas classic is perfect for kids and the young at heart. With two actors playing all the roles, audience members will be invited to participate in the story telling.

The Redhouse Arts Center brings Eric Shaeffer's stage adaptation by (with special arrangement with Arthur Whitelaw and Ruby Persson) to life under the delightful direction of Jonathan David Martin. Indeed, A Charlie Brown Christmas is the first holiday show to take place in the newly relocated Redhouse and it is a delightful trip down memory lane.

Set in a 1944 deserted Victorian boathouse on the Talley place in Lebanon, Missouri, Talley's Folly follows Matt Friedman, an accountant from St. Louis, who has arrived to plead his love to Sally Talley, the susceptible but uncertain daughter of the family. Bookish, erudite, totally honest, and delightfully funny, Matt refuses to accept Sally's rebuffs and her fears that her family would never approve of their marriage. Charming and indomitable, Matt gradually overcomes Sally's defenses, telling his innermost secrets to his loved one and, in return, learning hers as well.

This past weekend the Syracuse City Ballet, the only professional ballet company serving the Central New York community, presented its annual festive and heartwarming production of The Nutcracker astutely directed and choreographed by Syracuse City Ballet founding Artistic Director Kathleen Rathbun. The talented dancers performed to the familiar music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, lighting up the stage at the Crouse Hinds Theater creating lasting memories and carrying on tradition for many Central New Yorkers.
