Telemundo News' coverage of the election of Pope Francis won an Emmy Award at the 35th annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards hosted by The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) during a gala ceremony in New York, the first time specific categories for Spanish-language television were included.

On March 13, 2013, the eyes of the world were on ROME when a papal conclave elected Jorge Mario Bergoglio as Pope Francis- the church's first Latin American Pope. Telemundo News' coverage of the event started from the moment the white smoke emanated from the Vatican and involved continuous updates and analysis on "Un Nuevo Día," "Al Rojo Vivo con María Celeste" and "Noticiero Telemundo" as well as a live, one-hour special news program. José Díaz-Balart headed the coverage direct from the Vatican along with reporters Rogelio Mora-Tagle and Vanessa Hauc, while Maria Celeste Arrarás was at the helm from the network studios with special guests.
