Exhibits Development Group (EDG), St. Paul, MN, and Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles, CA, announce the presentation of the celebrated 1916 silent film, Sherlock Holmes, featuring the most famous Sherlock actor of all times, American actor-playwright William Gillette. The film, recently rediscovered, will be presented in an exclusive one-night showing on Friday, July 31, at The Theatre at Ace Hotel. The film, which is owned by Flicker Alley, has been shown in only two other venues in the United States: to a sold-out San Francisco Silent Film Festival audience in May, where it premiered in the US, and at a silent film festival in Seattle.

EDG, producer of the popular traveling exhibition, The International EXHIBITION of Sherlock Holmes, currently on display at Discovery Cube in Santa Ana, will present the film in partnership with Ace Hotel to support the EXHIBITION and to celebrate all things Sherlock with the LA film, arts and museum community. Part of the proceeds will benefit Wounded Vets.

"We are so excited to further celebrate all things Sherlock in Los Angeles, the epicenter of movie-making," exclaimed AMY Noble Seitz, Founder-CEO of EDG. "The timing is perfect to present the highly revered, lost-but-found 1916 silent film at the beautiful UA Theatre. We are celebrating venue number six on a 21-city tour of our international exhibition, currently at Discovery Cube, the only California venue on the tour."

The silent movie, made in 1916 and titled Sherlock Holmes, features the first great Sherlock Holmes, William Gillette. Gillette set the pattern for all subsequent stage and motion picture Holmes's. This film was based on the 1899 play that Gillette wrote in collaboration with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, which was still being performed as late as 1932. It had been lost for decades, misfiled in the vaults of the Cinmathque Franaise film archive in Paris.

Even Sherlock's creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, thought Gillette was perfect for the role. After reading Gillette's play in 1899, Conan Doyle reportedly said, "It's good to see the old chap back," as the author himself had killed Holmes off in his 1893 story, "The Final Problem."

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Russell Merritt, professor of film at the University of California, Berkeley, and the supervising editor of the restoration project, said, "As far as Holmes is concerned, there's not an actor dead or alive who hasn't consciously or intuitively played off Gillette."

Film restorer Robert Byrne said, "It's an amazing privilege to work with these reels that have been lost for generations. William Gillette's Sherlock Holmes has ranked among the holy grails of lost film, and my first glimpse of the footage confirms Gillette's magnetism. Audiences are going to be blown away when they see the original Sherlock Holmes on screen for the first time."
