Online Petition Calls On Matt Smith to Donate Pay Disparity from THE CROWN

A new internet petition is calling on actor Matt Smith and Netflix to donate the surplus salary Smith received while filming the hit series THE CROWN.

The petition, which has already gathered some 24,000 signatures, is a movement started in response to the news that Smith earned more than his award-winning Crown co-star Claire Foy.

The Care2 petition is asking asking Smith and Netflix to donate the difference in the actor's paychecks to the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund, as a way to "make up for this sexist pay gap."

News of the pay gap broke last week, with the show's creators admitting that Smith earned more than his co-star based on his popularity from his three-season run as the title player on the series Doctor Who.

A rep for the show announced the production's intent to right the pay gap, stating, "Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen."
