NBC4 New York Supports MAKING A DIFFERENCE ON THE HOMEFRONT

By: Jun. 21, 2011

NBC 4 New York is teaming up with the Manhattan and U.S. Chambers of Commerce in support of an inaugural job fair as NBC News launches its "Making a Difference on the Homefront" series, a year-long programming commitment by "NBC Nightly News with BrIan Williams" and other NBC News platforms to spotlight issues of importance to veterans and military families across the country. The day-long job fair, aimed at providing job opportunities for veterans, will take place alongside Pier 86's Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City on Thursday, June 23. NBC 4 New York will feature programming designed to encourage veterans to participate in this unique event.

"NBC 4 New York is pleased to support our local veterans," said Michael Jack, President and General Manager of NBC 4 New York. "The role of local news is to serve its community and what better way to do that than to help give our local veterans an opportunity to succeed after serving our country."

In addition to the 100 participating private companies representing all sectors and industries, including Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Hyatt Hotels, HSBC and New York Life Insurance, veterans and military spouses will find some unique public sector job opportunities, such as with the New York City Police and Fire Departments. Only employers who are actually hiring may participate in the job fair. Veterans must show proof of military service to be eligible to apply for jobs.

NBC 4 programming will include information on the job fair. Registration for the job fair will take place from 7:30 am - 8:30 am, followed by a series of workshops and breakout sessions. The hiring fair closes at 3:30 pm.

"The U.S. Chamber is excited to bring over 100 employers with job opportunities across all industries and sectors to New York City, where there are thousands of talented veterans seeking employment," said Kevin Schmiegel, Vice President of the U.S. Chamber's Veterans Employment Program and a 20-year Marine veteran. "This hiring fair is a perfect example of the public and private sectors working together in a coordinated way to make a difference for veterans and their families in local communities where they are returning every day."

The June 23 job fair will be followed by a second hiring fair with NBC4 Los Angeles on Sunday, July 10, with others to be announced over the course of the year in partnership with NBC affiliate stations. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, along with the Department of Labor's Veterans' Employment and Training Services, will conduct more than 100 job fairs across the country in an effort to assist veterans and their spouses in finding second careers in their local communities.
