James McAvoy Signs On For 'X-Men: First Class' Film

According to Entertainment Weekly, James McAvoy has signed on for the upcoming 'X-Men' prequel 'X-Men: First Class.' There has been no confirmation on what character McAvoy will play, but it is rumored he will play the young Erik Lensherr, or Magneto. In previous X-Men films Ian McKellan has played the older Magneto.

The film centers around Xavior and Magneto as young men discovering their powers and becoming friends. The film will explore the friendship between the men and how they turned into enemies as they are portrayed in the X-Men series.

There is no word as of yet if Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine.

Bryan Singer will produce the film, Singer directed the original 'X-Men' film as well as the sequel. The film is set to begin production this summer in London. The film is set to be released June 3 2011.

McAvoy's stage credits include, THE TEMPEST, ROMEO AND JULIET, WEST SIDE STORY, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, LOVERS, OUT IN THE OPEN, PRIVATES ON PARADE, BREATHING CORPSES, and THREE DAYS OF RAIN. McAvoy has starred in such films as 'Band Of Brothers,' 'Wimbledon,' 'The Chronicles of Narnia,' 'The Last King of Scotland,' 'Becoming Jane,' 'Atonement,' and 'Wanted.'
