Today, J.K. Rowling released a new tale from the Harry Potter universe exclusively for Halloween.

The author has periodically released new pieces through her website Pottermore.com and TODAY.com, letting fans get to know little-known characters and corners of the Harry Potter world. This Halloween, she revealed the story behind Dolores Umbridge, one of the most malicious characters in the Harry Potter universe.

"Umbridge is not only one of the most malicious Potter characters, she is the only person other than Lord Voldemort to leave a permanent physical scar on Harry," according to pottermore.com.

The site reveals, "The new exclusive J.K. Rowling content provides a rich, 1,700-word backstory about Umbridge's life filled with many new details as well as Rowling's revealing first-person thoughts and reflections about the character."

Among the new details about the character is that she once carved the words "I must not tell lies" on to the back of Harry's hand during a detention. This makes her the only person other than Lord Voldemort to leave a permanent physical scar on the boy wizard. It is also revealed that Umbridge is a half blood - the daughter of a wizard and a Muggle. This fact is contrary to her constant lies about her pure blood status in the book series.
