GRAVITY Orbits to Third Box Office Win with $31 Million; CARRIE Falls to CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, THE FIFTH ESTATE Bombs

GRAVITY orbited to its third weekend box office win with an estimated $31 million - becoming one of October's highest-grossing films of all time.

The remake of the classic horror film CARRIE, based upon Stephen King's novel opened in third place, taking in $17 million, undershooting Sony's initial projection of $20 million.

CARRIE is based on the King novel of the same name about a teenage girl dealing with everyday school life in the face of her overbearing, religious mother and burgeoning understanding of her telekinetic powers. The original film was directed by Brian DePalma and was recently translated for the Broadway stage.

In its second weekend, CAPTAIN PHILLIPS with Tom Hanks came in second, grossing an additional $17.3 million, and bumpings its total to $53.3 million.

The final new film this weekend, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger's ESCAPE PLAN took in just $9.8 million - despite its $70 million budget.

In other box office news, Disney's critically-panned THE FIFTH ESTATE, which drew early buzz for Benedict Cumberbatch's performance as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, bombed at the box office. In its first three days, the film managed to scrape up a meager $1.7 million, and opening at eighth.

The story begins as WikiLeaks founder Assange (Cumberbatch) and his colleague Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl) team up to become underground watchdogs of the privileged and powerful. On a shoestring, they create a platform that allows whistleblowers to anonymously leak covert data, shining a light on the dark recesses of government secrets and corporate crimes. Soon, they are breaking more hard news than the world's most legendary media organizations combined. But when Assange and Berg gain access to the biggest trove of confidential intelligence documents in U.S. history, they battle each other and a defining question of our time: what are the costs of keeping secrets in a free society-and what are the costs of exposing them?"
