FOX Casts Latin Telenova Superstar as Lead for URBAN COWBOY Reboot

As BWW reported in May, FOX is teaming with writer-director Craig Brewer and Paramount TV for a small screen adaptation of the John Travolta and Debra Winger-led film URBAN COWBOY.

Today, Deadline reports exclusivley that Mexican actor and singer Alfonso Herrera will take over the role made famous by Travolta in the eimagining of the 1980 film.

While not well known in the U.S., Herrera made his American acting debut with a recurring role on the Netflix drama series Sense8. He best known among Latin America for his starring role in a host of telenovelas turned TV series, including Rebelde and The Perfect Dictatorship. He will next be seen in Antonio Chavarría's The Chosen.

Herrera is also a member of the popular music group RBD, which won an award for International band at the Billboard Latin Music Awards. The actor also boasts over 1.5 million Twitter followers.

Craig Brewer will pen and direct the pilot for the project and serve as executive producer the series Paramount TV and 20th Century FOX TV. Also on board to executive produce are the film's original producer Robert Evans and Sue Naegle.

The TV adaptation of "Urban Cowboy" will "follow the star-crossed relationship of Sissy and Bud as it unfolds against the gritty backdrop of rodeos, oil refineries, line dancing clubs and other aspects of modern-day Texas."

The original film, written by Aaron Latham and James Bridges and directed by Bridges was Travolta's follow up to Saturday Night Fever and confirmed his place as a verified Hollywood star.
