According to The Guardian Drew Barrymore is signing on to direct the 'Wizard Of Oz' squel 'Surrender Dorothy.' When the project was first proposed in 2002, Barrymore was in line to star in the film as the great-great-granddaughter of Dorothy. The film follows this Dorothy relative as she fights against the Wicked Witch of the West for control of Earth and Oz.
Barrymore recently ventured behind the camera for 2009's 'Whip It.' Barrymore recently won a Golden Globe award for her portrayal of Little Edie in the HBO movie 'Grey Gardens.' Barrymore broke into Hollywood in 1982 when she played Gertie in 'E.T.' Since then Barrymore has starred in such films as 'Babes In Toyland,' 'Batman Forever,' 'Scream,' 'The Wedding Singer,' 'Never Been Kissed,' 'Charlie's Angels,' 'Riding in Cars with Boys,' and 'Everybody's Fine.'
All 14 of Frank L. Baum's Oz books are out of copyright, meaning anyone is free to use their source as they like. There is no word on when this project will begin production or who will be replacing Barrymore as the lead.
