Digitalspy reports that Simon Cowell has revealed that he has asked rock legend David Bowie to join The X Factor panel when the show returns for its third season. However, according to the report, the singer has thus far refused the offer.

In an interview with the UK's Daily Mail, Cowell described Bowie as a "legend" and implied that he'd approached the singer-songwriter about the idea of coming on the show as a mentor. "It's no secret I've asked him, and he hasn't said yes yet, but I'll keep extending the invitation," he said.

Cowell continued, "Why Bowie? He's a legend. He's a great songwriter, he has massive influence on music today and he's 100% credible. I'm a fan - not just of his music but of him, the man. He's cool. Most of us aren't. Bowie is."

A major figure for over four decades in the world of popular music, Bowie is widely regarded as an innovator, particularly for his work in the 1970s. He is known for his distinctive voice as well as the intellectual depth and considerable eclecticism of his work.
