BBC America enjoyed its highest-ever audience this Christmas Day, December 25th as 2.47 million viewers tuned in for this year's Doctor Who Christmas special.

Titled 'The Time of The Doctor', the broadcast broke the channel's ratings record, set only a month ago by Doctor Who's 50th anniversary special, which drew 2.4 million viewers. In the special, starring Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman, The Doctor must sacrifice everything to save a town called Christmas from the Time Lord's greatest enemies.

Matt Smith made his final appearance as the iconic Time Lord in Wednesday's episode. The actor appeared on the series for nearly five seasons.

During his time as the Doctor, Matt has reached over 30 million unique UK viewers and his incarnation has seen the show go truly global. He was also the first actor to be nominated for a BAFTA in the role. The BBC celebrated Matt Smith's legacy with an all-new behind-the-scenes special; The Doctors Revisited - The Eleventh Doctor special on Sunday, November 24.
