Cynthia Nixon Discusses Running for New York Governor and More on CBS SUNDAY MORNING this Sunday, July 1

Seeking the Democratic nomination for governor of New York is the "biggest gamble" of actress-turned-politician Cynthia Nixon's life, she tells Erin Moriarty in an interview for CBSSUNDAY MORNING to be broadcast Sunday, July 1 (9:00 AM) on the CBS Television Network.

Nixon, an award-winning actor best known for her work on "Sex and the City," is one of more than three dozen women across the country running for their state's highest office. In New York, Nixon will face off against incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a primary for the right to represent the Democratic Party in the election.

Nixon tells Moriarty that the political endeavor is "the toughest and most exhilarating and the biggest gamble of my life, I would say."

Though she has never held a public office of any kind, she said she was moved to jump in after the last presidential election. Political polls also indicate she's a long shot to unseat Cuomo.

"I think Donald Trump's election was a kick in the pants to so many of us," Nixon says. "And I think all the women running this year were - were such an inspiration - because what are we waiting for? What are we waiting around for? There's no cavalry coming."

To that end, she also says she's running to influence the future of the Democratic Party.

"This - this race, as with so many of the races around the country, I think are really - a fight for the soul of the Democratic Party," Nixon says. "We need a Democratic Party that is not so beholden to big money interests that it loses sight of its values and the things it stands for."

Nixon talks with Moriarty about her childhood, her acting career and her home life.

Moriarty asks whether Nixon feels like she is on the longest audition of her career.

"It's really something different," Nixon says. "It's a profession or an endeavor that takes every part of you, that takes your heart, that takes your head, that takes your improvisatory nature, your recall of facts."

CBS SUNDAY MORNING is broadcast Sundays (9:00-10:30 AM, ET) on the CBS Television Network. Rand Morrison is the executive producer.
