Chloe Grace Moretz is exchanging the purse and heels for a new fashion piece -- a fin.

BroadwayWorld has learned that Moretz (KICK-ASS, IF I STAY) has been cast as the title role in Universal's live-action adaptation of THE LITTLE MERMAID. Before Disney fans get too ahead of themselves, the film is described as based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, not the cartoon musical.

Sofia Coppola was originally cast to lead the film, but she parted ways over creative differences with the filmmakers a few months ago.

Screenwriter Richard Curtis (LOVE ACTUALLY) is in talks to pen the final version of the script, whose earlier iterations were written by Caroline Thompson (EDWARD SCISSORHANDS), Kelly Marcel (FIFTY SHADES OF GREY), and Abi Morgan (SHAME). As of yet, no director is tied to the project, though producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are at the helm.

Keep checking back with BroadwayWorld as we bring more updates on this developing story!

Moretz last starred on the big screen in If I Stay and has been tapped for the upcoming movies Dark Places and The Fifth Wave. Among her past credits are Carrie, the Kick-Ass films, Hugo and more.
