CBS SUNDAY MORNING to Showcase Harry Winston Jeweler's Red Carpet Gems, 2/24

When superstar actresses hit the red carpet for Hollywood's biggest night this weekend, an elite few will be draped in millions of dollars in diamonds on loan from Harry Winston Jewelers. Serena Altschul goes behind the scenes at the famed gem dealer to see how the diamonds go from the company's salons to gracing some of the world's most famous faces on CBS SUNDAY MORNING WITH Charles Osgood to be broadcast Feb. 24 (9:00 AM, ET) on the CBS Television Network.

The trend of stars borrowing jewelry for red carpet affairs began in 1944, when Harry Winston, founder of the store bearing his name, loaned Best Actress Academy Award winner Jennifer Jones earrings to wear to the ceremony. Now, wearing Harry Winston items on a red carpet is considered by fashion experts to be the ultimate status symbol.

"You are amongst a group of elite Hollywood actresses that have worn Harry Winston," Marie Claire creative director Nina Garcia tells Altschul. "You have reached the crème de la crème. It doesn't get any better than that."

Altschul reports that some of the high-ticket items, such as a $9.5 million diamond and tourmaline necklace, are so valuable that Winston provides a security detail for the actresses as well.

"Once you're wearing those Harry Winston jewels, that means you have joined the company of stars like Katherine Hepburn," Garcia says, naming others. "Really, you can't go any higher than that."
