After last week's scare fest, FtWD slowed things down a bit as we delved more into how everyone is personally coping. Their lives are slowly falling apart and even the strongest among them is about to crumble when they discover that maybe, just maybe, the military arriving isn't the best sign?

Even though life inside the fenced in, military-imposed perimeter has seemingly returned to "normal" (?), Chris is in the beginnings of making a video diary of what is unfolding. In his filming, he notices, in the distance, a mirror flashing in the dead zone. Life, perhaps? He shows the footage to Travis who doesn't seem to care and Madison who does and takes it upon herself to investigate. She slips outside the perimeter, but winds up hiding from soldiers and climbing back inside. She reports to Salazar what she saw outside and he warns her that this is the beginning of the end.

Resident family d-bag, Nick, is floating in the pool and stealing morphine from his dying neighbor, Hector, as Alicia is still grieving over the loss of Matt and nanny, Susan. Upon investigating Susan's apartment, she finds a note and realizes Susan killed herself. Alicia tattoos Matt's last doodle on her arm. She provides comfort to her brother after Madison realizes he's been using and smacks him up real good. (#overdue)

Liza, meanwhile, has been using her non-existent nursing degree to provide healthcare to Hector and other neighbors. When a government doctor, Dr. Exner arrives to give actual diagnosis, she asks Liza to assist her. She takes Griselda with the military to perform surgery and hopes to prevent amputation and also takes Nick after she realizes he's still a user much to the violent opposition of Salazar, Madison and Travis. She asks Liza to go with her to assist and Liza agrees leaving behind a horrified Chris.

The military presence, at first a comfort to Travis, is now starting to be concerning. The head jerk in charge, Lt. Moyers, takes time between golf swings to order Travis around and casually mention that he takes who he wants of the quarantine, even if all they're doing is basically annoying him. Ophelia, meanwhile, is flirting with a soldier (Guest Star, Shawn Hatosy) to get medicine. At the end, when they are all feeling at their most defeated, Travis finally sees the mirror signal Chris saw only to have it eliminated quickly by military gunfire.

Needless to say, tensions are running high. Despite their little vehicular tryst, Madison and Travis are at each other's throats about parenting, household responsibilities and, oh yeah, trusting the military presence in their neighborhood. Seeing Liza ride away with Dr. Exner after she apprehended Nick isn't going to endear Liza to Madison any time soon. I'm mostly worried about Chris who already has a salty relationship with his father, more than likely isn't going to handle being virtually abandoned by his mother in this time of crisis.

And Nick? Buddy? Um, you're going to have to get a lot more endearing quickly, because right now? I'm kind of rooting for the military to take you out. At this point, he has NO redeeming qualities. Even his minor breakdown in the bathroom with his sister felt a little bit too late as did Madison's freakout on him. And I do have to give her credit for calling Travis out on his treatment of Chris. Both of them treat the other's children with more respect than they treat their own. I wonder what that dynamic will be like now that Liza has left.

So Moyers is not the greatest but, what do we make of Dr. Exner? Is she really on the people's side or is she truly in the government's pocket? She did promise Salazar he could go with Griselda to the hospital and didn't bat an eye when they refused to take him. She is suspicious, I will give her that. And what exactly was going on up in the Dead Zone. Is the military executing trouble makers? If so, things don't look good for Nick. And like I said, at this point, I'm indifferent.

Only two more episodes of this quick first season. Now that everybody is near their breaking point, what is it going to take for them to pull together?
