BWW Asks: SMASH Creator Theresa Rebeck Calls Season 2 'Complete Disaster'; Who's to Blame?

By: May. 01, 2013

In a recent series of emails this week, SMASH creator Theresa Rebeck called the show's sophomore season a "complete disaster." The former showrunner left the series at the conclusion of season one.

In the email exchange with Buzzfeed web site, Rebeck criticized the site's January posting which commented on the current problems ailing the NBC musical drama. Speaking in the third person she notes "If in fact Theresa Rebeck was the problem with SMASH and the train wreck it became, wouldn't things have gotten better instead of drastically worse once she left?"

Rebeck added that the show's ratings, currently at an all-time low, were the least of its worries. "Most media reporters would agree that the second season is a complete disaster," she wrote. "and that the troubles of a once promising show go far beyond faring poorly in the ratings."

So who is to blame for the problems plaguing the once popular series, now relegated to the undesirable Saturday night time slot? Had SMASH already hit a "point of no return" even before new showrunner Josh Safran took the reins, or was it Safran himself who steered a show, once brimming with potential, in the entirely wrong direction.

Tell us your thoughts!
