Before fans even had time to miss the star of the recently canceled ABC comedy 'Don't Trust the B--- in Apt 23', James Van Der Beek has signed on to lead the cast of the upcoming CBS comedy pilot FRIENDS WITH BETTER LIVES, according to Deadline.

The multi-camera project, from Dana Klein, will be directed by James Burrows and will be produced by 20th Century FOX TV and Kaplan Entertainment. According to the report it will follow, "six 30-something friends who each think the other has it better."

Van Der Beek will portray 'Will,' described as "a sarcastic gynecologist who expects the absolute worst from everyone after his (soon-to-be) ex-wife's infidelity."

The Dawson's Creek alum is currently featured in the Geffen Playhouse's production of The Gift. He will next be seen on the big screen in Jason Reitman's Labor Day. Van Der Beek is the second Apt. 23 cast member to book a pilot. His former co-star Krysten Ritter will headline NBC's comedy Assistance.
