MGM, Warner Bros and GK Films' TOMB RAIDER reboot has officially found its Lara Croft in THE DANISH GIRL's Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander, according to Deadline.

Roar Uthaug will direct the film, which "will tell the story of a young and untested Lara Croft fighting to survive her first adventure."

Paramount released the first two TOMB RAIDER films in 2001 and 2003 with Angelina Jolie starring.

Others strongly in contention for the role were STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS' Daisy Ridley, Cara Delevingne and Saoirse Ronan, multiple reports indicate, but Vikander was always the top choice for Croft.

Vikander has appeared in such films as THE FIFTH ESTATE, EX MACHINA, and THE DANISH GIRL with Eddie Redmayne. She can next be seen opposite Matt Damon in the latest JASON BOURNE installment, as well as THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS and SUBMERGENCE.

The original Tomb Raider game was published in 1996 by the London-based video game company Eidos and went on to become one of the most successful video games of the time. Eidos (including Crystal Dynamics) is now part of an international interactive entertainment group, Square Enix. A pop culture phenomenon, the original Tomb Raider games have sold over 35 million game units worldwide making Lara Croft one of the most recognized names in the gaming industry. Most recently, Square Enix released the highly-anticipated reboot of the series, simply titled Tomb Raider, on March 5, 2013 to critical acclaim. Its follow-up, Rise of the Tomb Raider, was released in 2015.
