ABC Passes on Spinoff of THE MIDDLE

ABC has passed on the spinoff of "The Middle" which revolved around the character Sue Heck, according to Variety.

ABC shot a pilot starring Eden Sher, who played Sue on the original series. The network had been developing "Sue in the City" as a potential followup to "The Middle," which wrapped its nine-season run earlier this year.

The original series' creators DeAnne Heline and Eileen Heisler wrote the spinoff. ABC confirmed the decision Wednesday afternoon.

ABC is currently in the middle of an executive transition as entertainment president Channing Dungey has stepped down and will be succeeded by Karey Burke, who used to be a top programming executive at FreeForm and NBC.

"Sue in the City" was going to follow her adventures as a young adult after leaving her small fictional town of Orson, Indiana for a new life in Chicago.
