Filmmaker Mark Brocking's Short Film ASCENT To Compete As Part of This Year's Oscar-Qualifying Festival

Filmmaker Mark Brocking will show his most recent narrative short film Ascent at the 21st Annual Dances With Films at the TCL Chinese Theaters in Hollywood, Sunday, June 10th at 5:00PM. The festival runs June 7- 17th.

Written and directed by Mark Brocking, Ascent is the story of Valerie, a Spanish artist living in London, who is dealing with the death of her dearest grandmother. She inherits a mysterious gift which results in a very unusual turn of events. Valerie is sent on a journey of self-discovery and has to overcome her own fears to gain a new understanding of what her grandmother's life was really about. What will Valerie do with her new-found knowledge?

The film stars Montserrat Roig de Puig (The Other Boleyn Girl), Joanna Wake (Doctors) and Gately Freeman (Murder Maps).

Mark Brocking has been working in the film industry since 1990. He started his career in 2D animation working on features for Disney, Warner Brothers, and Steven Spielberg, among others. In 2003 he entered the field of CG animation at Framestore London, working his way up to Supervising Animator on such films as Narnia The Dawn Treader and Where the Wild Things Are. In 2009, he was nominated for a BAFTA for his work as Animation Director on the TV series Primeval 2.

Mark started writing and directing short films in 2010 which has resulted in three short films: The Barber's Cut (2014), The Double Cross (2016) and Ascent (2018). His films have screened in over 150 festivals worldwide and have won more than 70 international awards. He lives in London, UK with his wife and 2 children.

The final lineup will feature more than 200 titles, chosen from record 2,200 submissions from all over the globe. The juried narrative competition section includes 16 features and more than three-dozen shorts. DWF also has a category for groundbreaking short and feature documentaries, provocative genre fare in the Midnight section, and the most exciting music videos and dance-themed films from the indie scene in the Downbeats section. The Fusion section brings together a multitude of additional features and shorts.

Notable Dances With Films alumni who first gained notice at the festival include Gina Rodriguez, Bryan Cranston, Jesse Eisenberg, and John Hawkes, among many others.
