Birdland Jazz Club Announces April 2018 Schedule

Birdland will kick-off their exciting month of programming with the following acts:
April 1 (Sunday) at 6:00PM
Emilio Solla y La Inestable de Brooklyn
Argentina born, Grammy nominated pianist and composer Emilio Solla is able to summarize through this small orchestra his different ideas as composer and arranger in a large ensemble format. La Inestable de Brooklyn is a nine-piece orchestra with an unusual instrumental combination including two reed players, one trumpet, one trombone, accordion/bandoneon, violin, piano, double-bass and drums. This peculiar ensemble, made up of many different smaller units, can project textures and sounds that evoke a wide range of styles and influences. But even as the influence of the great creator of modern tango is present in Solla's compositions, he takes here a broader approach, from academic counterpoint writing to free improvisation, from traditional tango and Latin American sounds to a standard trio plus horns that brings at times the classical color of the greatest and most distinctly American art form: jazz music.

Jeffry Denman Hosts "UKE NIGHT!"
The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to present another "Uke Night," a Broadway celebration of the ukulele! Hosted by Broadway singer/dancer/actor/director Jeffry Denman, this "Uke Night" will star some of Broadway's most talented performers, including Marc Kudisch, Luke Hawkins, Hannah Elless, Andy Taylor, Jason Poole, Nancy Anderson and The Skivvies. Material will include Hawaiian, Broadway, Pop and iconic songs from the 20's and 30's.

In just over fifteen years, critically acclaimed vocalist Jane Monheit's silky phrasing and natural knack for storytelling have earned two Grammy nominations and established her as one of the most beloved and accomplished vocalists on the scene. Jane's sincere and romantic interpretations of songs have made her a favorite in the jazz, cabaret, and Broadway worlds. With a range and vocal skill rarely heard today, she is as comfortable singing Lennon/McCartney and Randy Newman as she is with Ivan Lins and Cole Porter.

Lainie Cooke
Lainie Cooke began her singing career at age 6 on radio and TV in her home town of Minneapolis. Arriving in NYC in the 1960's she became one of the most successful voice over actors in the country while continuing to appear in clubs in New York, Los Angeles, and Jamaica, WI. This night celebrates the songs of Benny Carter with Zaccai Curtis on keys, Luques Curtis on bass, Ralph Peterson on drums and Myron Walden on sax.

Fernando Garcia
Born in San Juan and raised in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, García studied guitar at the extension program of the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico and drumset at Micheo Music Academy, while later receiving a bachelor's degree in Música Popular from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico. In New York City, he has established himself as a drummer, percussionist, composer and educator. Throughout his career he has worked equally as a band leader as well as a sideman.

Natalie Douglas Tributes: Elvis
The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to announce that singer Natalie Douglas will return to the historic music room with more "Tributes!" On Monday, April 9 at 7pm, she will celebrate the music and magic of the one and only Elvis Presley. With Music Directors, Mark Hartman & Brian Nash, and her band of all-star musicians, Natalie will celebrate the artistry, brilliance & singular achievements of four legendary influences: on April 9th, the much-adored trailblazer & icon, Elvis Presley; on May 14th, the sublime & beloved "First Lady of Song" Ella Fitzgerald; on June 18th, the glamour & drama of Dame Shirley Bassey; and on July 16th, the timeless Goddess of Pop, Cher.

Eliane Elias
Multi GRAMMY winner Eliane Elias' April 2018 release, "Music from Man of La Mancha" on Concord Records features Eliane's interpretation of the music of this 5 Tony Award winning musical including the hit "The Impossible Dream". The album, which was recorded years ago, has never before been released and was produced by Eliane Elias and the late Mitch Leigh, the composer of all the music in the musical and film that featured Oscar winners Sophia Loren and Peter O' Toole. When Leigh commissioned the work, he specifically looked for Eliane to interpret, arrange and record his songs as an instrumental LATIN Jazz album in her own inimitable way. For the release week at Birdland, Eliane will be on piano and vocals presenting some of her best loved Brazilian repertoire as well as music from the new CD.

Yoav Eshed
LandEscape is an exciting journey of guitar and double-bass duo, two storytelling jazz musicians with an innovative playing and a deep exciting sound. Simón Willson is a Chilean born, Brooklyn based bassist and composer. As an eclectic and in demand sideman, he has toured with a host of different artists and co-leads the groups Great on Paper and Earprint. Yoav Eshed is an award-winning guitarist and composer originally from Israel, based in Brooklyn, NY. Yoav started to play the piano at the age of 3 and displayed prodigious abilities playing Haydn, Bach and Mendelssohn. Picked up the guitar at the age of 13 and since then has been performing around the world with top Israeli jazz musicians.

ALON & JOCA
Duo ALON & JOCA is an encounter between two eclectic and virtuoso musicians, Israeli pianist/composer and arranger Alon Yavnai & Brazilian singer/songwriter & percussionist Joca Perpignan. The long and special connection between them makes their music deep and unique. Their international career experience brings to their music a variety of influences from around the globe, which reflects in their original compositions and arrangements, creating an exciting and boundless music. Celebrating their new recording with the renowned NDR Bigband in Hamburg, ALON & JOCA are performing one show at Birdland, as part of their U.S tour.

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to present multi-Grammy and Tony nominated composer Frank Wildhorn in another "Frank Wildhorn & Friends," with special guests Constantine Maroulis, Carrie Manolakos, Haley Swindal, Takako & Kyle Dean Massey. he series of very special one-night-only concerts celebrates the songs and favorite performers from the composer's wide range of work in popular, theatrical and classical music. Frank Wildhorn's works span the worlds of popular, theatrical, and classical music, including Jekyll & Hyde, The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Civil War. New York-based alto saxophonist Julien Hucq leads this dynamic straight ahead jazz quartet, whose fusion of melodic flow and high energy has a powerful impact on its listeners. The Julien Hucq Quartet includes Julien Hucq on alto saxophone, Claudio Roditi on trumpet, Jeb Patton on piano, Calvin Hill on bass and Rodney Green on drums.

Gunhild Carling: Sweden's "Queen of Swing"
The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to announce that Gunhild Carling, known as Sweden's "Queen of Swing," will perform one night only at Birdland. Whether she's singing favorite jazz standards, playing one of many instruments (trumpet, trombone, harmonica, flute, recorder, or jazz bagpipe), Gunhild's sublime showmanship shines through. Carling is a jazz artist of the old breed, combining extraordinary skills on trumpet and trombone with vaudeville stunts. In her playing, she shows heavy influences from Bix and Louie Armstrong as well as Billie Holiday. As if that weren't enough, Gunhild also tap dances and sings during her shows. Gunhild is notorious for playing three trumpets at once and a recent video of her playing bagpipes went viral with over 15 million views.

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to announce that singer Maureen McGovern will celebrate the 45th Anniversary of her theme song, "The Morning After" with an intimate concert on the historic stage. "The Morning After" won the Oscar for Best Song of the Year in 1973, and became an international Gold Record and garnered her a Grammy Nomination for Best New Artist. Along with musical director/pianist Jeff Harris, Ms. McGovern will perform some of her most beloved hits, including "Can You Read My Mind?" and "We May Never Love Like This Again," along with many other Oscar-winning and classic film songs.

Vocalist and pianist Karrin Allyson, "brings a timbre that is part ice and part grain... incisive, original and emotionally convincing." (Village Voice) Karrin has explored a wide range of material throughout her career from standards, pop songs, blues, and Bossa Nova to a self-produced album of holiday songs. Her recent recording and Motema Records debut, "Many a New Day, Karrin Allyson Sings Rodgers & Hammerstein," was GRAMMY nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Album.

Dena DeRose
It's no small accomplishment to be thought of as "The most creative and compelling singer-pianist since Shirley Horn", but that's exactly how Joel Siegel of the Washington City Paper described Dena DeRose. If she comes to your city and you want to catch the show, go early, because the room is going to be packed. She not only awes her audiences and music critics with her facility on the piano and her swinging, soothing vocal style but, as Richard Scheinin (San Jose Mercury) aptly put it, "... she exudes joy ... what soul!" As a recording artist, DeRose has 12 CDs as a leader to her credit, all of which have received superior accolades. Her newest, and second, HighNote release 'United' features the incomparable rhythm section of Martin Wind and Matt Wilson with guests Ingrid Jensen on trumpet and Peter Bernstein on guitar.

Joe Alterman
Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Alterman moved to New York in the fall of 2007 to study music at New York University. Inspired by the joyous, soulful sounds of pianists Les McCann, Ramsey Lewis and Monty Alexander and lauded by all three as "a wonderful pianist whose playing brings smiles and good feelings to his listeners," (Monty Alexander), "already a giant" (Les McCann), and a pianist whose "will to explore and his ability to swing is something to behold" (Ramsey Lewis), Alterman's music is bound to bring a smile to your face as your feet tap away. Only 28 years old, Alterman has released four critically-acclaimed albums, his most recent being 2017's "Comin' Home To You". He was profiled three times by Nat Hentoff and was the subject of Hentoff's very last piece about music in March 2016.

Max von Essen in Concert with Billy Stritch
The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to present Broadway singer/actor Max von Essen in concert. Max von Essen, currently starring in the hit Broadway production of Anastasia, along with his musical director, the incomparable Billy Stritch, brings his old fashioned NEW show celebrating the best of Broadway and the American songbook. Max is best known for his recent portrayal of Henri Baurel in An American in Paris on Broadway. He also appeared on Broadway in the revival of Evita, the revival of Les Misérables, Dance of the Vampires, Jesus Christ Superstar and the closing company of the original Les Misérables.

The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra
Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill -- leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz" (NY Times) -- was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte.
