Birdland Announces May 2018 Lineup

Birdland will kick-off their exciting month of programming with the following acts:

May 1-2 (Tuesday-Wednesday) at 8:30PM and 11:00PM

Fleurine & Boys from Brazil featuring Brad Mehldau

Jazz-vocalist Fleurine, "focuses on Brazilian music with an evocative jazz lilt." (New York Times) Her most recent project delves even deeper into Brazil featuring talented Brazilian composers, Chico Pinheiro and Ian Faquini, while also showcasing her own brand new original songs interspersed with work of some of her favorite Brazilian composers Tom Jobim and Chico Buarque. With Fleurine singing vocals, she will be joined by Brad Mehldau on piano, Vitor Goncalves on accordion, Ian Faquini on guitar, Eduardo Belo on bass and Rogerop Boccato on percussion.

May 3-5 (Thursday-Saturday) at 8:30PM and 11:00PM

Savion Glover featuring Marcus Gilmore

A supreme meeting of rhythm masters occurs with this inspired duet. The Tony Award winning Savion Glover, an artist called "the greatest virtuoso of our time, perhaps of all time" (New Yorker), joins forces with Marcus Gilmore, an heir to jazz royalty as grandson to iconic drummer Roy Haynes, a dynamic musician known for his work with Vijay Iyer, Chick Corea, Steve Coleman, Nicholas Payton, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Ravi Coltrane. Glover and Gilmore are where rhythm and melody converge.

Dida Pelled

New York-based Israeli guitarist and vocalist Dida has a particular talent for storytelling. One of the first people to take note of Dida's abilities and promise was trumpet player and producer Fabio Morgera who put together her first recording project. The album 'Dida Plays and Sings' was released on the quality Italian label 'Red Records' in 2011 and boasts two of today's jazz greats on the bill, Roy Hargrove and Gregory Hutchinson.

The Bombshells

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to announce the return of The Bombshells (Tiffany Dissette, Heather Lundstedt O'Neill and Leah Sprecher) to Birdland. They were created in 2016 by three ladies and one fella looking to bring the musicality, sentiments and novelty of vintage female trio acts to modern audiences today. By blending Top 40 hits with the tight harmonies made famous by the Andrews Sisters, they bridge the gap between old and new, bringing joy to both young and more seasoned audiences. All of their arrangements are completely original and present songs you've heard a million times on the radio in a brand new way. Their swinging band will include bandleader/arranger David Lamoureux on drums.

Bill Charlap two-week engagement at Birdland

One of the world's premier jazz pianists, BILL CHARLAP has performed and recorded with many leading artists of our time, ranging from jazz masters Phil Woods and Wynton Marsalis to singers Tony Bennett and Barbra Streisand. Since 1997, he has led the Bill Charlap Trio with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington, now recognized as one of the leading groups in jazz. Charlap is the artistic director of New York City's Jazz in July Festival at the 92nd Street Y, and he has produced concerts for Jazz at Lincoln Center, the JVC Jazz Festival and the Hollywood Bowl. A two-time Grammy nominee, Charlap is married to renowned jazz pianist Renee Rosnes, and the two often collaborate in a duo piano setting. In the spring of 2010, Charlap and Rosnes released "Double Portrait", their acclaimed duo piano recording on the Blue Note label.

Mathis Picard

Mathis Picard is a French-Malagasy Pianist based in New York City. A winning member of the Montreux Jazz Foundation, Mathis has shared the international stage with Patti Smith, Wynton Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jason Moran, Lee Ritenour, Yaron Herman, and DJ Kindness.

Melvis Santa & Ashedí

Cuba has brought up a remarkable convergence of Afro Cuban singers, from Rita Montaner and Merceditas Valdés to Celia Cruz. And now, well into the reestablishment of the relationship between the US and the Caribbean island, New York based singer/songwriter Melvis Santa emerges in that line of amazing musicians as one of the newest voices of Afro Cuban and Latin Jazz. Since her arrival in NYC, Melvis has touched audiences and critics, with a creative and soulful energy that eclipses the boundaries of Cuban rhythms, soul and jazz parameters.

Natalie Douglas Tributes: Ella Fitzgerald

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to announce that singer Natalie Douglas will return to the historic music room with more "Tributes!" where she will celebrate the music and magic of the one and only Ella Fitzgerald.

Karen Oberlin with Her Trio: Confound Me, Songs in Search of Something

Joy, purpose, approval, belonging and, of course, love -- we're all yearning for something, striving for something, even though that something may change over the course of our lives. But what do we want? How do we choose? From Dorothy Fields to Simon & Garfunkel, Elvis Costello to Rosnes & Hajdu, join Karen Oberlin and her trio as she seeks out that often elusive something in song.

Simona Premazzi Quintet "Dream Team"

New York based pianist Simona Premazzi has developed an impressive body of work as a composer and bandleader. Originally from Italy, Premazzi hails from a small town in the outskirts of Milano, where she began playing piano at age 8 and a half. A gifted musician, Simona is a graduate of the conservatory of music in Udine. She followed up her studies in Milano, by enrolling in the International Academy of Music and CPM music school, studying under the incomparable supervision of two of Italy's formidable jazz masters, Massimo Colombo and Franco D'Andrea.

KT Sullivan

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is thrilled to announce that cabaret superstar KT Sullivan will return to the historic stage. KT Sullivan celebrates the master melodist Jerome Kern with songs both obscure ("Raggedy Ann" and "Bungalow In "Quogue") and classic ("Bill", "All the Things You Are" and, yes, "Old Man River"). Buoyed by jazz greats Jon Weber on piano and Steve Doyle on bass, KT will surprise with hot tunes In Swing Time.

Nicki Parrott

Born in Newcastle, Australia, Nicki started her musical training at age four with the piano, followed by the flute, soon after. Nicki switched to double bass at the age of 15. In 2007 and 2008, Nicki received back to back honors for Swing Journal's Best Jazz Vocal Album (Moon River and Fly Me to The Moon, respectively). In 2010 her album Black Coffee (Venus) received Swing Journal's Gold Disc award.

René Marie

In a span of two decades, 11 recordings and countless stage performances, vocalist René Marie has cemented her reputation as not only a singer but also a composer, arranger, theatrical performer and teacher. Guided and tempered by powerful life lessons and rooted in jazz traditions laid down by Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington and other leading ladies of past generations, she borrows various elements of folk, R&B and even classical and country to create a captivating hybrid style. Her body of work is musical, but it's more than just music. It's an exploration of the bright and dark corners of the human experience, and an affirmation of the power of the human spirit.

The Donny Nova Band

Featuring Julia Trojan" Starring Corey Cott, Laura Osnes, Brandon J. Ellis, Joe Carroll, Joey Pero, Geoff Packard & Nate Hopkins

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is thrilled to announce that after their sold-out debut performance, "The Donny Nova Band Featuring Julia Trojan" from the Broadway musical, Bandstand, will reassemble once more for two special concerts. Corey Cott (as Donny Nova), Brandon J. Ellis, Joe Carroll, Joey Pero, Geoff Packard, Nate Hopkins, and Laura Osnes (as Julia Trojan) will perform favorite tunes from the original score - plus some swingin' standards and new surprises.

BOSSABRASIL Presents Marcos Valle with Special Guests Paula and Jaques Morelenbaum

BossaBrasil, conceived by producer Pat Philips-Strata, brings together top Brazilian artists for a celebration of the musical sounds of Brazil. With over 300 compositions to his credit, pianist/composer Marcos Valle is one of the major songwriters of Brazilian popular music. He will be joined by special guests vocalist Paula Morelenbaum and cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, as well as vocalist Patricia Alves, Renata Massa on drums, Jesse Sadoc on trumpet, Itaiguara Brandao on bass and Roni Ben-Hur on guitar.

Abelita Mateus

Living in the NYC area since 2012, Mateus has taken a remarkable path. She released her debut album Vivenda in 2017 (co-produced by and featuring guitarist Romero Lubambo), which reached the 24th position on the Jazz Week Charts. Mateus is currently the pianist for the Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Cuban Experience, directed by Dizzy Gillespie alumni John Lee.

David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band

Inspired by the noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues, David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band breathes life and passion into America's own great art form. Now in its 14th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city's best musical bargain! Tuba player David Ostwald leads a rotating lineup that features talents such as clarinetist Anat Cohen, trombonist/vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ehud Asherie, drummer Marion Felder and more!

The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill -- leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz" (NY Times) -- was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte.

Jim Caruso's Cast Party

Jim Caruso's Cast Party is a wildly popular weekly soiree that brings a sprinkling of Broadway glitz and urbane wit to the legendary Birdland in New York City every Monday night. It's a cool cabaret night-out enlivened by a hilariously impromptu variety show. Showbiz superstars, backed by Steve Doyle on bass, Billy Stritch on piano and Daniel Glass on drums, hit the stage alongside up-and-comers, serving up jaw-dropping music and general razzle-dazzle.
