KAY BROTHERS for Distinctive Wines from Australia

If you're shopping for wine or planning perfect pairings for your favorite meal, we highly suggest Kay Brothers. They are the oldest and one of the most celebrated wineries in Southern Australia known for crafting some of the finest Shiraz and Cabernet in the country.

Kay Brothers Winery is located in McLaren Vale, South Australia. It was established in 1890 by brothers, Herbert and Frederick Kay. The vineyards border St. Vincent's Gulf, among the picturesque rolling foothills of the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges, an ideal location for growing grapes. This historic winery celebrated its first grape crush in 1891. Now, over 125 years later, the third and fourth generations of the Kay family, Herbert's grandsons Colin and Bill along with granddaughter Alice and great-granddaughter Elspeth, continue the family winemaking tradition.

The Kay Brothers winery utilizes grapes from their own 22-hectare vineyards to produce about 12,000 cases of wine per year including their signature, Block 6 Shiraz as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache, Mataro and Muscat Blanc. Their rich, full-bodied wines use the original open fermenters and a French basket press that dates back to the early days of the winery. All of the Kay Brothers wines have a minimum of 18 months maturation in small American oak caskets.

Broadwayworld had the pleasure of dining at Tommy Bahama in Midtown with Michael Wehrs, Export Director for Kay Brothers. Our dining experience included an array of appetizers and entrees that paired beautifully with Kay Brothers wines. Wehrs pointed out that 50% of Australian wines are produced in the most southern region of the continent and that Kay Brothers is located in the best producing area of Australia. The region benefits from seaside influences making the nature of the growing climate similar to that of Greece. He also commented that the winery produces sophisticated vintages as well as ones that are great for a daily sip.

We were delighted to have the opportunity to sample their 2015 Grenache. With its bright red garnet color, it is a fresh and tasty aromatic wine filled with juicy red berry fruits. It has been inspired by changes in modern cuisine and goes particularly well with a crudité, tapas style dishes, and light entrees.

Kay Brothers' signature wine, the Block 6 Shiraz 2013 is the 29th release of the distinctive single vineyard wine. This stylish wine with a deep purple color has a medium bodied complex nature, yet it is totally approachable. It benefits from careful cellaring and decanting prior to serving is recommended. Served at room temperature, it pairs wonderfully with hearty meat dishes. It is a wine to be treasured while enjoying a relaxing meal experience. We like that Kay Brothers Shiraz wines are also vegan friendly making them perfect to pair with trending cuisine. Our readers will like to know that the original Shiraz vines at Kay Brothers have a long history, having been planted in 1892 by the founders, Herbert and Frederick.

We also enjoyed the Cuthbert Cabernet Sauvignon 2015. Its deep ruby color has lovely aromas of mint and blackberry. The fine-grained tannins give the wine a long finish on the palate. This is a wine that is recommended for decanting prior to serving. It is a great accompaniment for a rich, satisfying meal and pairs very well with with red meats.
