Phalgun Prativadi's Book Earns Publishing Company's Award of Literary Excellence
by BWW News Desk - June 21, 2016
Author Phalgun Prativadi hopes readers find his new novel thought-provoking and enjoyable to read. At least one reader agrees that it is, which led to 'Being and Becoming' earning a Dog Ear Publishing Award of Literary Excellence. 'My editor Leslie Hatch's comments were very insightful, I felt, and reflected the kinds of things that I had hoped would reach the reader,' Prativadi said. Dog Ear Publishing Award of Literary Excellence winners are determined by the company's editorial team. Dog Ear Publishing's editorial team decides which products qualify for the award, and the recommendations are then reviewed by the managing editor, editorial services manager and the publisher. Winning books include the award logo on their covers. Prativadi couldn't be more pleased about the award. 'I was surprised, honestly, and flattered,' he said. 'After researching it on the Internet, I saw how seriously Dog Ear takes the award and how proud they are of it and, as a result, recognized what an honor it was. I told my family, and they were proud as well.' 'Being and Becoming' features Dr. Arya Krish, a physician and medical researcher whose father was among those to make discoveries advancing biosynthetic human tissue transplantation (and earned a Nobel Prize for Medicine posthumously for it). Organ transplantation dramatically changes the outlook for those in the United States, and the wealth associated with that treatment allows the medical institute to do humanitarian work in India and other places. But corruption and shady dealings take their toll on this doctor with a conscience, and when Krish's worst fears are confirmed, he must wrestle with the idea that the end justifies the means. Prativadi, an infectious diseases physician in Pittsburgh, said because this was his first attempt at writing an original novel, he worked carefully. 'I tried (and learned) to be patient in the writing process and feel that I was successful in telling a story in my own original style and use it to share some reflections on our shared human condition,' he said. Although Prativadi has written a few articles and took creative writing in college, he clearly remembers when the writer inside him was born - freshman year of high school. 'I was mediocre in my English class at best, until my mother dutifully and faithfully pushed me to achieve my potential.' The resulting essay on 'Great Expectations' was so good that his teacher suspected he had plagiarized it. 'When she pulled me aside and threatened to call my mother, I couldn't contain my excitement because obviously I wrote the essay myself and my mom knew it. Being accused of plagiarism on my own original work was quite an achievement for me in that moment.' The author is confident in his choice to use Dog Ear Publishing after researching self-publishing options. 'Leslie Hatch was an experienced and insightful editor, and she helped achieve a professional finish,' he said. 'The staff was accessible and knowledgeable. I feel the book is a professionally produced product, and that will hopefully give it an advantage in trying to reach readers.' Prativadi, who is grateful for his family's love and support thus far, has already starting writing a sequel to 'Being and Becoming,' hoping to add to the series with future books. Fox is currently undergoing Octreotide treatment for the tumors with monthly injections. According to the author, progress is being made however it is a slow progress. 'I would just like people to be aware that there's more than breast cancer or colon cancer or the other cancers that come on strong and have specific symptoms,' says Fox. 'Carcinoid Cancer is very quiet as in it usually goes undetected unless the patient is treated for something else. It's quiet, unassuming like a zebra. So unlike other cancers that come about like thundering horses hooves.' Fox is currently working on the second book of her Island Love Series and says she hopes that she'll be able to bring more attention to a little known and rare cancer as she makes appearances for book signings and fund raising. For more information on Carcinoid Cancer, visit the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation online or contact the author at www.lindastilesfox.com
Nathan Ritzo Pens TOWER 13
by BWW News Desk - June 21, 2016
Was the decision to invade Iraq a good one or a one of the worst political blunders of the 21st Century? A debate still in the news today, more than a decade after the fact. But for Sergeant Mathew Duffy, a young American soldier stationed at Camp Victory, Baghdad, during Operation Iraqi Freedom II, the question never came up. He was there, like it or not, stuck in a hot, hostile environment. His job: to take to the guard tower with two other soldiers on the night of Saddam Hussein's arraignment - July 1, 2004. Thanks to the media's careless broadcasting of Saddam Hussein's location, Sgt. Duffy and his team would face numerous dangers from within as well as without. Based on the actual experiences of soldiers who were there, 'Tower 13' ($15.95, paperback, 266 pps, Hellgate Press) affords the reader an intimate, realistic account of a soldier's day-to-day life at war. Author Nathan Ritzo is a U.S. Army veteran from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, who served two tours in Iraq. One was at Camp Victory, Baghdad, in 2004, and the other in the International Zone, Baghdad, 2007. He currently resides in Portsmouth with his two daughters. This is his first novel. 'Tower 13' is published by Hellgate Press (www.hellgatepress.com), a leading publisher of military history, veteran memoirs, historical fiction and adventure travel books, and is available in paperback and ebook on Amazon.com and wherever fine books are sold.
