Road Less Traveled Productions Presents RLTP: Blacklight, 9/11

By: Sep. 11, 2011

In accordance with its ongoing commitment to support original theatre and as part of its mission to reach an increasingly broader theatergoing audience, Road Less Traveled Productions (RLTP) today announced a new, late-night theatre program, RLTP: Blacklight, will launch next season. RLTP: Blacklight will run at 10:30PM every Friday and Saturday night of RLTP's main production season, following the normally scheduled season selection. RLTP: Blacklight is the invention of co-Program Directors Drew McCabe and Justin Karcher, under the supervision of RLTP Artistic Director and founder Scott Behrend.

Drew McCabe, a director, writer, and artist from WNY, is an Artie Award Nominee for his direction on the musical The Rocky Horror Show and for his play (NOT). He has directed over 20 productions and has worked locally with Road Less Traveled, Buffalo United Artists, ALT Theatre, and more. Justin Karcher is a poet and playwright who "documents and interprets the strange American experience of today." He is the author of the recent sleeper-hit production Last of the Sensitive Bastards, which was developed in RLTP's Emanuel Fried New Play Workshop.

"Every weekend, RLTP: Blacklight will offer a mix of new, unorthodox, and hysterically funny plays, as well as sketch comedy, improv, stand-up, burlesque, neo-vaudeville, live music, and much more," promised McCabe. "All gloves are off and anything is possible." McCabe anticipated that RLTP: Blacklight would premiere on Saturday, September 9, 2011, the night after Curtain Up!, the theatre community's annual season launch party; and speculated that the scope of RLTP: Blacklight offerings might even include such diverse programming as "puppet shows, comic book readings, Gen-Y fairy tales," Lucha-va-voom ("sexy Mexican wrestling," according to McCabe), and, naturally, "Christopher Walken impersonation nights."

All tickets for RLTP: Blacklight will cost only $10, a price point that McCabe called "crucial to connecting with the target audience for this programming." Behrend agreed, noting the program will engage multiple theatergoing demographics. "We expect to see RLTP's usual, intrepid audience member attend the evening's season production and then stick around and see RLTP: Blacklight, the second in a 'double feature,' for only $10 more... and we also expect to see a younger and possibly new RLTP audience member, for whom a 10:30PM start time is a social norm and $10 is the right ticket price, to arrive to specifically check out some edgy and unorthodox entertainment!"

RLTP: Blacklight will boast its own in-house improvisational team, which McCabe indicated would be a recurring fixture of the program schedule. Auditions for the team will be held this spring. Karcher also expressed the expectation that RLTP: Blacklight would give local playwrights more opportunities to see their works produced on a local stage.
