It’s Not Faire: The Musical is a raunchy, hilarious, and heartfelt story about friendship, identity, and self-acceptance — all set against the quirky, chaotic backdrop of a Renaissance Faire. It’s Not Faire follows Tripp, a ditsy SoundCloud rapper who takes a job as a fry cook at a Renaissance Faire after losing his college scholarship. Guided by the randy ghost of George Washington in drag, Tripp enters a world of insecure, sexually frustrated theatrical performers who enlist him to star as Laertes in the fair’s production of Hamlet. Thrown into intense Shakespearean dialogue training, the broken marriage of the production's diva director and infidel star, and the pressure of two big off-Broadway producers coming to see the show, Tripp realizes that he’ll need to step up and “be a man” (whatever that means)!

“It’s Not Faire is a comedy that takes itself incredibly seriously — or rather, it’s a comedy written by two people who understand the importance of honesty and earnestness, even within ridiculous or awkward circumstances,” says Katie Nieto, the show’s bookwriter and lyricist. “At its core, it is a bold and campy story about how shame molds our public — and private — personas.”

“Writing the music for It’s Not Faire was a game of sneaking as much jazz and contemporary classical music into a setlist of parodies and showtunes as I possibly could,” says Jett Mills, the show’s composer. “The odd moments of genuine emotion were that much more intentional and difficult to write as a consequence, and I think the score is better for it.”
