From the opening, the ballet is infused with traditions and mysteries of Spain and the belief in the power of Fate. From the midst of the group emerge one man and one woman whom Fate binds together, sealing their destiny. The many dance rhythms in Bizet’s score make it ideal for dancing, brilliantly arranged as a one act ballet by controversial Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin. From a factory to a bull ring, with rambunctious factory girls, soldiers, love, jealousy and ultimately, the dramatic conclusion of Carmen’s fate.
