Okay. I am looking for some new "Sounds". lol. I have listened to the same cast recordings for a few years and am wanting to hear something new.
A CHORUS LINE ALL SHOOK UP ANNIE APPLE TREE AVENUE Q* BEAUTY AND THE BEAST CATS CHICAGO DREAMGIRLS GREASE HAIRSPRAY LEGALLY BLONDE LION KING LITTLE MERMAID MAMMA MIA! MARY POPPINS ON THE RECORD SHREK SEUSSICAL TARZAN WEST SIDE STORY WICKED XANADU YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
These are what I have cast recordings or movie-musical soundtracks for and the one w/ the star means I only have a few songs from it, because I haven't listened to the others because of a personal "curse word" situation with 'rents! lol. Anyway, I am a little interested in Dirty Dancing and want to find that 16-track OCR but can't seem to find it in stores. I might just have to get it from iTunes. I am waiting on OBCRs and NCRs from 9 to 5, WSS, and some of the newer shows/revivals. Updated On: 5/3/09 at 01:11 PM

I wouldn't listen to 'next to normal' it would give a way a lot of the show.

Based on wicked1492, would you recommend the OBC of Gypsy w/ Ethel Merman or the 2008 CR with Patti LuPone? I am a big fan of Merman, first seeing her on The Muppet Show, and do not know which one to get. I listened to Charlie Brown on iTunes and really like it! And Cheno's on it! A big bonus. And with Little Shop, should I get the OBC, the CR w/ Kery Butler, or the movie soundtrack? I MIGHT want In The Heights.
I second a lot of these Little Shop with Kerry Millie OBC Into the Woods OBC (stay away from the 2002 revival) Sweeney OBC Bye Bye Birdie OBC (LOVE this!!!!) Guys and Dolls 1992 Revival with Nathan Lane
You'd probably love "Ragtime" OBC, but it has a few bad words-- most of them are racial slurs, but the usage of them is NOT condoned in the context of the show. It also uses the word "masturbates" in the song, "The Night That Goldman Spoke".
One musical that I adore but that many people dislike is The Scarlet Pimpernel. Give the thirty second samples a listen at the very least. There are some h words and d words, but nothing extensive. Terrence Mann, who you might recognize as the Beast in Beauty and the Beast and the Rum Tum Tugger in CATS, does a great job as the villain, and Douglas Sills is truly fantastic in the lead.
I definitely suggest you give Les Miserables a try-- the Tenth Anniversary Cast recording is a good place to start.

I can't even do this. There are so many things you need to listen to. How about composers... you need to listen to Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin, Bock and Harnick, Leonard Bernstein, Jerry Herman, Cole Porter, Kander and Ebb, Lerner and Loewe, Adam Guettel, Jule Styne, and so many more. Do some investigating for yourself.

I can tell that you like the more... fun, bubbly musicals. I would HIGHLY suggest in the Heights and the broadway Little Shop of Horrors. And if you want something a little different from your taste, get the 1998 Cabaret with Alan Cumming.
"There's nothing good on. The media hates Christmas. The media loves vampires, though. Maybe they will show a Twilight Christmas." -Danmeg's 10 year old son.
AndAllThatJazz22, that DEFINITELY describes me! lol. I couldn't find the word or phrase for it. I might get In the Heights tomorrow. I got a couple today at the library and FYE. I had another question: Original London or Broadway cast of CATS? I think I asked this question before but different w/ the video "soundtrack" against the Broadway cast. I had no interest in OLCR until listening to :30s. I wanted to ask first.
What I DID get: -Gypsy (Patti LuPone) -Little Shop of Horrors (Kerry Butler) -You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown (Kristin Chenoweth) -More songs from Avenue Q (rechecked out from library! lol)

Recent: Next to Normal Grey Gardens In The Heights The Light in the Piazza The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Thoroughly Modern Millie Urinetown
Less Recent: Anything Sondheim (minus a few...) Titanic Evita Once on This Island My Fair Lady
Just a few I thought of.
"Oh look at the time, three more intelligent plays just closed and THE ADDAMS FAMILY made another million dollars" -Jackie Hoffman, Broadway.com Audience Awards
Get the Original Little Shop. It's unpolished, and lovely. And Ellen Greene > Kerry Butler
OBC Cats. I have both, and prefer the OBC.
And I'm echoing TheActr, I started out liking the bubbly, and then I met Sondheim. And always go for the originals with him (the exception being Sunday, but I hate Patinkin on the OBCR)
And yes, I consider The Wiz a classic. Major hit, won the Tony, and totally enjoyable.
I am one of those hardcore collector types who wants EVERYTHING. A few years back I created a list of what I consider the basic library of 125 CD's covering musicals from the start of the 20th century onward.
Now you may not be looking to buy 100+ Cd's, but many of these are available at libraries. Have a look and (as others have suggested) explore more of the musical theatre's rich heritage.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks." Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
Frontrowcentre, do you happen to have an account on castalbums.org? I'd be interested to see what you have collected over the yers.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
