There is already a thread for the LA out-of-town tryout of 9 to 5: The Musical, but I think there should be a separate one for the Broadway production.

Previews begin in less than a month! I got my tickets for July in the mail this week.

Does anyone know of anything added or cut yet?

I bet I Killed the Boss will be cut with a new song in place of it.
Are all of the cast members staying?

Kevin Kern left the show to be in Wicked.

I'm not sure if they will replace him. He was only a Swing and perhaps, revamped, the show won't need his role.

I'm curious what the show will do for advertising in terms of live performances in anticipation of and beyond opening night. I can see Dolly and/or the cast making the rounds and hitting places like The View, Letterman, and the Today Show. Allison Janney fares well enough with the singing, but is better in the bigger production numbers. I think 9 to 5 will be the go-to number if they use the whole cast for these things. Without the ensemble, I see them using Backwoods Barbie. I don't think they would use Get Out and Stay Out because that would kinda ruin the 11 o'clock number.

Of course, this is assuming these aren't cut, but I'd highly doubt they would cut any of them. They might be different versions.

Do shows ever advertise with songs that have been added since tryouts? That seems like it would be risky since it might change in previews and hasn't been "tested." Has that happened?

Shine Like the Sun would be a great Today show/The View number.

For the Tonys and the Thanksgiving day parade, they HAVE to do 9 to 5.

I think they will use numbers from LA for advertising, mainly 9 to 5. Do you think they would do Shine Like the Sun for advertising?

^ I hope they do use it sometime. I love Shine Like the Sun! If they perform it maybe they can have Marc Kudisch tied and gagged in a chair since they sing it to him/each other.

Let's say what we think should get cut!

Thing I Want Cut:
*I Killed the Boss!

Things I Want Different:
*Backwoods Barbie (needs to be a bigger number)

I actually like "I Killed The Boss!" but it's a completely pointless song.

The dream sequence was too long in LA. I hope it was trimmed.

I think that may be the problem I had with 9 to 5. I always thought act 1 dragged on, and I think the dream sequence may have had to do with that.

Wickedfan11, it's "Backwoods Barbie," not "Backwards." But that seems to be a common mistake, and pretty funny. =)

Yes, taken together the dream sequences add up. But it was one of my favorite parts. Anyone notice the copy-machine images of Hart's face on the screen at the end of Judy's fantasy? They made me laugh.

I would cut I Killed the Boss. I like Out of Control but I'd be curious about a different first song for Judy. I'd also change Let Love Grow. It was very sweet, but too much so for me (in terms of lyrics) and I would change that staging. My other changes are smaller quibbles but they bug me: Doralee's last line in the transition from her fantasy to Violet's gets lost and Hart's story in the Finale just rub me the wrong way. I think it's just too much of a quick fix (**possible spoiler up ahead**) and it also uses a cannibalism stereotype of indigenous people.

Unfortunately, some of this show simply MUST be cut for time's sake. Act One labors on forever, despite how enjoyable it is. Sadly, though, the cuts will fall to the less important (or worst crafted) songs. If "Heart to Hart" goes, I will be devastated. If "Tattletale" goes, I'll be upset but not surprised. "5 to 9" must go. "I Killed The Boss" shouldn't even be a song for how badly it's structured or how repetitive the lyrics are.

Expect much more educated cuts and explanations in the morning. This show is my baby.
