That kind of came out of nowhere. It's a daring choice, though, since the original is so beloved and the materials is completely different from the recent movie musical hits.

If they wanted "major international", they would have to go outside our little theatre world, but then they might get an Eliza with little experience. Please don't laugh, but Lea Salonga? For Eliza? I LOVE LOVE LOVE the original so much, if this one turns out rotten, it would make me feel horrible. But, I still want to see it. It's not as bad when we have modern musicals getting wrecked in the movies, but please, don't ruin our classics.

Posted: 6/5/08 at 8:52pmI was just going to say what a great vehicle this would be for Anne Hathaway (who I also think could pull off Eliza on stage.)
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.

edit: Just after I reply this thread, I saw Kiera's name mentioned. I think this will feature some british actor and actress since CamMack's involved. And I think that's appropriate.

Actually I think Scarlett Johanson would be good. And it would look nice set in the real locations, but...
I don't see the point either. And messing around with the book? That book is fantastic!

No but seriously, when I read this, my first thought was "wow." Then I thought it might be a joke, but the news seems too real.
Anyway, I don't know what to say. I just watched my vhs of the movie last week (I know, I need to upgrade to a dvd of it) and I was sitting there thinking how truly beautiful this movie is.
BUT, you never can tell. This new movie could also be beautiful if they actually shoot in London and use real locations.
My only worry is the part where it said that they are going to add stuff from Pygmalion. The movie is already 170 minutes long. How much more do they want? Will there be an intermission? Then again, lots of people sat through Titanic.
I heard this remake rumor a long time ago, and I also heard that Kiera Knightley might be offered the role, and she was "studying the script." This was a long time ago, so things might have changed.
If this happens, then they might as well remake Mary Poppins and add the songs from the stage musical.

Although I don't like the idea of remaking the classic, highly cherished film, I think that Anne Hathaway or even Cameron Diaz would make a terrific Eliza.
I would much rather see a new film version of "Pygmalion".
