The problem with being in the UK and watching American award ceremonies online is that usually one has to sacrifice a certain amount of sleep to do so. Consequently, the next morning, I can never quite be sure how much of the awards ceremony actually happened, and how much was hallucinated in lieu of proper sleep. However, I've thought it through and examined the biiiiig thread, and I've come to the conclusion that Mark Rylance's acceptance speech at the Drama Desks last night really did happen. Sooo... does anyone have a transcript? A YouTube? An explanation? Anything? I'll be walking around with my confused face on for days, I reckon. o_O

Ha. I thought it was pretty funny. I don't think there really is an explanation, other than he wanted to have fun and make the audience laugh with his minute or so of acceptance speech time.

He got up there and told a story about a tattoo he has on his chest.

I thought it was brilliant and so very appropriate with his character in Boeing-Boeing.

I was also very confused by his speech. Was he trying to give the acceptance speech that his character in Boeing-Boeing would give? I assume that he has a British accent in real life, which he didn't seem to have during the speech. He also talked in the halting stop-start way that Robert does in the play. I thought it was funny, but I also felt like I was missing the central premise of the whole thing.

"What was the name of that cheese that I like?" "you can't run away forever...but there's nothing wrong with getting a good head start" "well I hope and I pray, that maybe someday, you'll walk in the room with my heart"
