Triumph Of Love at APAC (We're open! Pics!)

Just in case anyone's interested, here's the flyer for Triumph Of Love at the Astoria Performing Arts Center. We have a really great cast, and I think it's going to be a very cool production.

This is my very first show in NY, and it would be fantastic to see some BWW'ers there!

P.S. I had a thread about this on the OT board, but it disappeared, so I thought I'd start over on the main board . Triumph Of Love at APAC (We're open! Pics!)

I saw TRIUMPH opening night 1st preview on Broadway with Betty Buckley and F. Murray Abraham. It is one of the worst messes I've ever sat through and unbearably long. Deservedly a short run flop despite the stellar cast. Why anyone would revive it is beyond me.

I actually saw it on Broadway, too. I thought the score had really great moments. There was a song at the end of Act One that ended along the lines of "teach me how not to love you so". And "Serenity" was also good. And "Henchmen Are Forgotten". I remember there was a rhyme with "Medusa" and "loose-a".

And I think it's great that you're doing something unexpected and fresh. So congrats and break a leg!

jaystarr: That would be awesome! Let me know if you end up getting tickets. re: Triumph Of Love at APAC

Toddlin2: Well, to each his own, as they say. As for not knowing why anyone would revive it, it's done quite a lot, actually. I know of at least two very well-received productions of it out in CA just in the past 5 years or so. I'm sorry you had such a miserable experience with it.

DryMartini: Thanks so much! And yes, I actually get to sing "Serenity," which I think is a gorgeous song. And "Teach Me Not To Love You" is beautiful, too... A lot of the songs are, imho. re: Triumph Of Love at APAC

Well, not just me. The TIMES in it's Oct. 24, 1997 review said TOL is "a flat-footed parade of raunchy double-entendres and double takes that give new meaning to the phrase 'low comedy'." The audience also has a sense of "numbness". "Crude" is also used. I would add "lame, silly and adolescent".

Wow, Toddlin2, you must have really hated the show if you took the time to dig up a Times review from 1997. Sorry you had such a bad experience, but I enjoyed parts of the score and thought the lyrics were very good.

Yes, I'm aware of the reviews it got in its original production. Of course, we're not that production, but who knows? Maybe we'll be just as "flat footed." One can only hope! re: Triumph Of Love at APAC

I actually liked the show. Serenity was the best song in the score I think, although I adore "Teach Me Not to Love You" and "I'd Do Anything (for His Love)". (And yes, "Henchmen Are Forgotten" is cute). The night I was at the show, Serenity got a standing ovation in the middle of the first act.

I will try to come see it-I really did enjoy it. (Did you read the original Marivaux text before you did the musical-it is kind of interesting.)

The cast album def. has some wonderful moments. And a lot of incredible actors were involved.

'Tain't true that Triumph Of Love got bad reviews all around... there were enthusiastic raves in The New Yorker and USA Today, e.g. But the humor-impaired gentleman from the Times sealed its fate.

bwaygal1: No, I haven't read the original Marivaux yet... I intend to, however. (Although, being a huge fan of Moliere, I fear it won't compare.)

singingbackup: What an incredibly lovely thing to say! Thank you, and I can't wait to see ya there!

I love Moliere too, but Marivaux was quite ahead of his time in his writing. The original text is quite good. (This is the theater historian coming out in me-it's really ahead of its time in many ways. It wasn't, in fact, very popular at the time it was done.)

I encourage you to pick it up. And hopefully I'll see you sing my favorite song from the show, Serenity.

Hey again!

Two of our cast members - Abby Baum (Leonide) and Tripp Pettigrew (Agis) - were recently interviewed on the Broadway Bullet podcast, and I just listened to it, and they really did a great job!

Check it out if you have time. (They're on in the last third of the show) re: Triumph Of Love at APAC

What a great role for you Erika. You've got some of the best songs in the show; and while I find the text flawed, a great cast can punch it up.
