I was just turned on to these message boards about two months ago and this is the first new musical I have seen since, so I thought I would post a review. I thought CRY-BABY was just WONDERFUL! I cannot understand some of the downright hateful posts about it. Is it a masterpiece of the american musical theatre?.....NO. Does every show have to be though? It has some problems to be worked out for sure. But it has like 5 weeks of previews right?
Let's me start by saying though, I have seen every musical for the past 3 seasons and this is probally the most fun I have had in that time. It really is a musical comedy. It is just a simple fun comedy. The sets and costumes look like a norman rockwell painting, which a slight comic strip flair to them. I think the music is great, and the songs actually get laughs which is rare I feel. The Act two opening song, the finale and Screw loose all made me want the CD. And it totally has a John Waters sense of humor. Much more so that Hairspray I feel. I saw it Monday night (last night) and apparently I was not the only one who loved it because the audience was laughing as much as I was. There are a few things they could trim, namely the end of ACT 1 in the court room. It goes on a bit long. But I HAD SUCH A GOOD TIME! I didnt mind the flaws. Probally the show I enjoyed most this season. Performances are really strong. Espcially in the supporting characters. Ali Mauzey, Chris Hanke, & Harriat Harris all rock my face off. Harriat's one liner were hysterical. James Synder (Cry-Baby) is charming & sexy, with a great voice. Elizabeth Stanley (Allison) could use a little bit of developement. She took a little while to win me over. Not sure if it is her or the fact that she doenst have a lot to do. But that reprise she belted after the make-out seen was fierce! And she had me after that. And although it may not be some people's cup of tea. It is in no way the worst thing ever. I saw Dracula, Pirate Queen, Lestat, & High Fidelity and this is far better than any of those could ever hope to be. If anybody reading this just wants to have a good time. Laugh. Be entertained then go see this. Dont go for the life altering event of your theatre going life. I wish them the best of luck. If they can make a few adjustments, ( and I hope they take the time to) I think they could have a hit on there hands. Maybe not as big as Hairspray but Certianly the audience reaction last night indicated a crowd pleaser.
Boy, I've never seen a PR team be so agressive...sending their interns onto Broadwayworld, the message board which doesn't have approved registration, to shill a show that's gotten overwhelmingly negative reviews since it started previews.
EdwardMichaels, you obviously are connected to the show in some way, therefore your opinion is biased and no one on this board should take your review seriously. I think this thread should be deleted by the mods...
Good God! Where do you guys come up with all that??I think the man has the right to share what he thought of the show! Im glad you enjoyed the show EdwardMichaels59..... I missed it while it was in La Jolla....
Well Jonny Boy, lets see if he ever comes back and posts another thing in any other thread before we give him the benefit of the doubt. The shills are so easy to spot.
It doesnt make sense that just because he has a different view of the show that he has to be hounded! I have heard a lot of people liked the show, so I dont think he is the only one that holds that opinion=-)
Yes Yankeefan & Without Trace, what wonderful arguements. That because I like the show and you don't I must some how be connected. How is my opinion any less valid than yours? Why if someone has a different opinion does that make them a shill? I have no connection! Thanks for trying to insult my opinion though. Maybe it as simple as I like it and you didnt.
Thank you to Jonny boy for defending my right to an opinion and to enjoy this show.
Nobody is asking you to buy it! I usually like to see a show for myself before making judgements. People have ripped shows apart that I have absolutly loved on here so... I take what I hear with a grain of salt.
i did not just join and i dont work for anybody connected to the show. i just loved it!
i post on lots of theatre blogs and am a theatre lover, i had a wonderful time at this show and can't stand all the negativity you people are spreading.
its not because you gave it a good review (thats your opinion), you joined today to give the good review after the negative word of mouth for the show. The same thing happens with a lot of show that just open (i remember it with Grease) that when the members n here saw the show and reported back what a disaster it was lost of new members joined praising the show.
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna
I don't think I've ever seen this many shills hit the board all at once.

I chose, and my world was shaken- So what? The choice may have been mistaken,
The choosing was not...

Mel, you DID just join and have posted about nothing but love for CB except to post some "inside info" on a recording of N2N. So your case for being just a regular poster (non shill) is pretty weak.
I tend to notice this type of behavior when shows get a negative response from early previews. Notice how there were no such posts for both In the Heights and Passing Strange? Meaning new posters going out of their way to sing the praises of a certain show.
