If you don't want to know the details about her performance, don't read any further.

I saw the City Center mounting of GYPSY, and I absolutely loved it, so I was interested to see what kind of changes would be made for the Broadway version.

Besides blocking and some sets and costumes, I didn't find any major differences the way of acting choices other than the fact that there seemed to be more of a sexual relationship between Rose and Herbie, and that Patti changed much of her Rose's Turn.

I can't say whether I liked it or not. I was surprised at some of her choices and I applauded her for making differences in her performance. I don't know if it is just because I had already seen her perform the number live, so I wasn't as impressed, but I just wasn't as thrilled the Broadway version. It was a lot less frightening for me.

There was the curtain that came down in the beginning of the number and the one side was caught on something, so I'm not sure if that threw her off, but eventually it went up and she moved upstage to look off stage and say the lines that come before the song. I think she might have been a little rushed getting into the song and therefore didn't take the time she used to take with the monologue.

I loved when she yelled "Get off of my runway!" at Encores - but that was missing from this version, she just sang the notes. Luckily she kept the ending where she kind of slides up the last note into a scream. That was very effective.

But overall, something was missing for me. It was still brilliant, but I just don't know if I like it better.

This was also a Saturday evening performance, so she had a matinee earlier, so she may have been holding back a little as well. And then again, she may differ it every night as well.

Anyone have thoughts about her new version of the song?

ALSO: I thought the ending was a bit strange with her staggering around under the sign as if she was about to collapse. It was a bit over dramatic for me.

I love Patti.

I'm especially intrigued by this post:

Patti is the first to make "YOU GO GIRL" snap gestures after "Rose's Turn"....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

..as well as 2) pucker her lips and blow kisses ala Marilyn Monroe; 3) make a gun with her forefinger and thumb that she pulls from imaginary hip holsters and mouths the words "POW POW" as she winks at the audience two and three times, 3) relaxes her shoulders and shakes her proverbial maracas in the bawdiest of fashions and then throws her head back to laugh maniaclly.

She did all of the above and more (or should I say less?) at last night's performance.

The audience can not help but wonder what the hell is going on with Patti as a perfomer, certainly not as Mama Rose.

Talk about overkill. She's not just over the top, she's outside the building!!

I left the theater thinking the reason the on stage curtains were so frayed and the columns cracked and chipped was because Patti hadn't stopped chewing the scenery!! If she doesn't bring it down more than a peg or two soon, the entire cast will be standing on an empty stage by the time the show opens.

Yeah, I didn't see any snaps when I saw it, either.

Did anyone else notice the extra sexual tension between Herbie and Rose?

I didn't see it at Encores, but there is definitely strong sexual tension between Rose and Herbie in this version. It's awesome - it makes their relationship that much more defined.
