Where did the Name the Tony Awards come from? I always ask myself "WHO'S TONY AND WHY'S HE GETTING AN AWARD IF He's not in any of this year shows?".

In all seriousness tho where did the name come from? When are the nomainations gonna be announce (I think it's a while from now)

it's British in origin, "tony" meaning "posh" as in carrying a very high tone of taste....I thought everyone knew that.

Or it's named for the lead in SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER...the American Theatre Wing LOVED that movie! it even had dancing in it....

"Tony" was named after Antoinette Perry, a Broadway producer (she did the original Harvey back in 1944). She had died unexpededly at a relatively young age at the time that the Tonys started and it was in commenoration of her.

There's a new award called the Toni (with an "i") for road performers, named for Toni Tenille after her triumphant tour in Victor/Victoria.

Maybe your right, it was first won by Bette Midler in the '70's for her "Clams on the half shell" Broadway show perm, right?
