4 of Judy's songs in the original arrangements, sung by Lorna on her current tour in England.

Lorna hits Judy's wait-for-it final note in "Hello Bluebird":

EDIT: here's a better-quality version of Lorna doing "Hello Bluebird" from the Rupert DVD:

A goosebump-inducing duet with Judy (a la Natalie Cole) of "I Can't Give You Anything but Love" and "Through the Years":

Lorna rocks Sammy Davis Jr's very Rat-Pack-in-Vegas arrangement of "Birth of the Blues":

The final encore: Lorna sings "Shining Star," a hymn to her mother, sung contrapuntally, over Judy's "Over the Rainbow" from the Christmas show:

Fabulous and it's about time!
I wish HBO would film this for us poor folk out of the loop.

Or PBS, even.

I love this bitch, damn, I could listen to her all day. I just wish she was more comfortable moving around onstage. I've seen her perform in much more intimate venues, and even then she doesn't seem natural in her movements. She could even just stand still. It would be fine!

Thinking of ways to "fix" Lorna Luft or turn her into a superstar has driven more than one fan crazy. Best to enjoy her as she is: a great big voice and a warm personality inside the somewhat-barricaded body of a tough gal.

The defenses that keep from what reaching out across the footlights the way Judy did and Liza does are the same defenses that have kept her sober and sane and allowed her to be a good mom to Jesse and Vanessa.

Here's more Lorna on YouTube:

Funny how one youtube video leads to another. I always end up finding some gem or other. These wonderful videos of Lorna led me to this reminder of what Liza was at her prime, also singing one of her mother's favorite songs. I attended this concert, front row center. I don't think I've experienced a performance like it since.

I love that New Orleans concert--I have it on laserdisc!

And that version Liza does of Harvest Moon has haunted me ever since I heard her do it on a Johnny Carson show in the 70s. I taped it onto my portable cassette recorder the old-fashioned, low-tech (NO-tech!) way: by holding the microphone close to the TV set and cherished that cassette until it finally got chewed up.

Thanks for the posts PJ!

She's fantastic!

I think she's back in LA next week.

Next week Liza's doing a show at the Chumash casino in Santa Ynez on Thursday, Lorna's playing the McCallum with Michael Feinstein in Palm Desert on Friday, and then Liza's headlining the gala for the Frank Sinatra celebrity golf tournament fundraiser near Palm Springs on Saturday.
