"Gypsy, the great American musical, will return to Broadway starring Patti LuPone, the leading lady of the American musical theatre. Gypsy will reunite LuPone with co-stars Boyd Gaines and Laura Benanti."
Previews begin March 3. Updated On: 12/19/07 at 03:21 PM
This is going to throw a wrench in the gears come Awards season (up against "Sunday in the Park with George.")
But I echo Michael's thoughts (below). Tickets are going to be a steal once they're a-dozen weeks in. "Gypsy" just isn't an easy sell outside NY audiences. LuPone or not. (Just look at the Bernadette track-record)
Oh I know it's not "news." There wasn't a definitive opening until now. Had it lingered longer, it would have qualified for next season, is all I meant.
And I'm just so goddamn enamored with this coming-"Sunday," I don't want to see it lose some deserved nods... Then again, I don't think it's likely "Gypsy" would nab much (maybe Benanti)
Very exciting. I predict the response to this production will be more like the response to the Ravinia production, and Patti, Laura and Boyd will all be hailed.
Why would it suddenly be hailed like the Ravinia production? What do you see as changing, Pal Joey?
I actually think (and I'm not saying this to be mean) that there will be a lot of animosity for this revival from people who feel like it is unnecessary as a full Broadway revival and will resent Laurents for making it happen.
Michael Bennett...I agree with you. I think a lot of theatre-goers and the community will question the need for this revival on Broadway.
I'm not actually a Lupone fan at all, but I love GYPSY.
I don't want to sound mean or negative, but I haven't been a big fan of this revival coming to Broadway for a while. The last revival was so great and Bernadette was brilliant IMO. Why mess that up?
"Somethin's comin', I don't know what it is but it is gonna be great!"
Okay, the only Mixed review was from the Times. The Encores! production was received wonderfully. I don't know where you guys are making this sh!t up.
Back in July people were saying that Patti would've beat Ebersole out for the Tony had the show been on Broadway that season, now people are saying she *might* get a nod?
So bizarre.
Theatre is a safe place to do the unsafe things that need to be done.
