Perseid Meteor Shower.#1
Posted: 8/12/07 at 9:00pm
Tonight is the peak of the annual meteor shower, so if you're a night owl (SM2, can you hear me?) have clear skies and would enjoy fire raining from the skies, check it out.

The best time will be between midnight and 2AM.

I'll never match the spectacular displays I had while living at the Grand Canyon (I actually got to look DOWN on a fireball once - unbelievable!) - but whatever I get, I'll take.

Interaction with other elements of the Universe should not be taken for granted.

Yes, Taz - you just need some open sky - and it goes on for awhile.

One of the few advantages to living in the middle of nowhere is the spectacular view of things like meteor showers :)

I will be lying in the middle of my field at midnight for this one.
I can't talk now. I gotta go get my wallet out of the toaster.

the best time is 2AM EASTERN time, for those of us out West the best viewing starts at 11

from space.com:

'According to the best estimates, in 2007 the Earth is predicted to cut through the densest part of the Perseid stream sometime around 2 a.m. ET on Monday, Aug. 13. That corresponds to 11 p.m. PT on Aug. 12 for those living in the Western United States or Canada.'

So I should go inside for another two hours until this thing starts? I'm out in my front yard on my laptop, sitting on a blanket, waiting for it.

Just so you know, it's not like you're going to see a whole bunch happening at once. Anywhere from 12 to 15 an hour - those that are heavy enough to penetrate the atmosphere and be visible through the light pollution - would be average.

And yes, you should be able to see the biggest and brightest in suburbia - it doesn't squelch EVERYTHING re: Perseid Meteor Shower.

We don't have a cloud in the sky.

But, we are in suburbia re: Perseid Meteor Shower.

I doubt I can see a lot being that I'm in the city... but maybe one or three... had I known, I would've planned to head to the mountains or something.

I saw about 5 while I was standing outside about half an hour ago. It was gorgeous and even, dare I say, humbling. Basically breathtaking. And I'm obsessed with the night sky.

from 11 to midnight I sat outside and counted 10......truly amazing.

of course Steve came home from work, thought I was in bed, so when I came in from the backyard I set off the alarm, lol.......he freaked.

Just on our street, there were at least five families all sitting out front in lawn chairs to watch the show - and they were actually talking with each other and having a good time. Good stuff!

For me, the best part had to do with my beloved partner. He doesn't normally pay attention to such things, but he knows I do. Well, he had seen a brief news report about this earlier, so out-of-the-blue he asked if we should drive somewhere more remote so we could really see and enjoy it. All things considered, it just wasn't feasible - but it made my heart full and happy to have had that validation of our love and awareness.

I was out from around 9 - 11:30 pm EST at a park with friends. We saw 5 or 6 and then went home because it was getting cloudy.
