Good Gay Movies to Netflix?#1
Posted: 7/22/07 at 5:23pm
I recently just sat down & watched (for the first time) "The Broken Hearts Club" and i have to say i really enjoyed myself! i wish there were more good gay movies out there.

i'm pretty keen on what to avoid & what to take interest in but i was wondering if there's any other films out there i should take note of? i'm basically looking for fun movies to Netflix.

some ideas of my tastes
hated Another Gay Movie
loved Girls Will Be Girls, Trick, Sordid Lives
hated ANY MOVIE MADE BY "Picture This! Entertainment", "Wolfe Video" or other cheap wretched bad acting films
loved Brokeback, Boys Don't Cry, Heavenly Creatures, Angels In America

any recommendations are recommended :) thanks!

ps: sorry if this has already been covered.

Have an interesting double feature. Two films that both explore what it's like for a gay man who is denying his homosexuality:

For the comic treatment, check out KIDS IN THE HALL: BRAIN CANDY.

For the dramatic treatment, check out FAR FROM HEAVEN.

i LOVE "but i'm a cheerleader" (i actually just added it to my blockbuster total access list)
it's a comedy and i dont know how it compares to "another gay movie" though so i dont know if it is your tastes or not.

Oh I forgot!!

Try "Heights". I really liked that one. And it has Glenn Close and James Marsden.

I also have one called C.R.A.Z.Y
Haven't seen it yet, but I'm intrigued by the synopsis. Check out what netflix has to say about it!

I recently saw C.R.A.Z.Y. I really liked it, but I have to say it was advertised as a completely different film. I saw it as the closing night film of a gay and lesbian film fest, and they pushed it as a fun retro comedy - NOT THE CASE AT ALL. That being said, really great film.

There's a great gay German film called "Guys and Balls" about a gay soccer team. LOVED IT!
Also, a BBC film called "When I'm 64" - one of my favorite gay films of all time.

29th and Gay is quite cute, and it was written/(produced?) by a board member here. Otis33 to be exact! lol

Also - if you like scary films, Hellbent is the first "Friday the 13th" type film produced for the gay community and was quite fun to watch in a theater full of gay men - I know your living room may be smaller re: Good Gay Movies to Netflix? - but it gives you a great reason to snuggle that certain someone on the couch.

Otis - I loved Guys and Balls!

There is also a brilliant documentary on the Gay Games in Chicago that will fill you with so much love and pride - it is just beautiful.

Ah, cheezedoodle, you're sweet. I didn't want to push my own movie, but since you brought it up...

29th and Gay - the lowest of low budget movies, with not your average leading man - but very sweet. And, available on Netflix!

I'll second Hellbent. Lots of fun. Also, PromQueen was fun.

One last recommend before I head out to church (Beer bust at the Eagle) 8 Women. French film with every french diva actress that ever exsisted. It's a musical murder mystery that is so visually stunning - one of my all time faves.

Beautiful Thing
29th and Gay

Not really a movie movie, but if you haven't seen it, get the first installment of Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City.

personally, my favorite gay flicks all come from France, such as:

Les Roseaux sauvages
Drôle de Félix
Presque Rien
Ma Vraie Vie à Rouen
A Toute Vitesse
La Chatte à Deux Têtes

plus anything by François Ozon. and yeah, Pedro Almodóvar & Todd Haynes.

I'm not a big fan of BAD EDUCATION, I think the script is choppy and the story itself is not nearly as compelling as ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER.
I highly recommend HEIGHTS, excellent story.
