so...at the midnight showing.there was a HUGE line for chuck and Larry...college heads, sandler fans...and their dates..
at Hairspray...it was 1/4 full. and hardly any reactions.. mostly little girls.
what do you predict the outcome for the first weekend will be? I know this will be biased because its a broadway board.. but I'm going to bet that its going to be pretty close. I hope Hairspray wins...but i have a strange feeling CHuck and Larry will be the winner. even if the reviews are dim....for C&H..and hairspray is getting raves...
i think our dumbed down american society is going to go for Chuck and Larry.
UPDATE: CHUCK AND LARRY WINS! hairspray comes in at #3

I think a lot of Hairspray' s target audience was already in bed by midnight so you really can't judge by that. Go to a matinée today and compare the two.
I have a feeling Chuck and Larry will do well... Adam Sandler is a household name and you have those people who will think it is funny.
We can only hope that Hairspray will do well.
"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."
The folks over at ew.com are predicting C&L to bring in about $38 mil, and $22 mil for Hairspray. I don't think we should slit our wrists if an Adam Sandler comedy brings in more $s in the first week. A certain number of people will see ANY Adam Sandler movie, and most of them will see it in the first week. Reviews and word of mouth give a movie 'legs', and that's what Hairspray needs to rely on. If they can grab the High School Musical crowd, they'll be a hit.

I for sure see Hairspray first to get them the big bucks on the first weekend, but I want to see Chuck and Larry for my friend. I always go and see his film. Anyway, I'll try to see Hairspray more than once.

Well there has been tons of advertising in the bay area. I think they've done a good job. Plus, they were on Oprah a while back and if you are on that show you are gonna get a decent profit from the film.

Personally, I think Chuck and Larry will do better than Hairspray, but I wouldn't mind being wrong in this case.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
Well maybe Hairspray will pick up after the first weekend...who knows. But Hairspray just looks like a fun movie that works for the summer. Chuck and Larry is a 'typical' comedy that really you could just rent.

Sadly, C&L will probably do better on its opening weekend, but Hairspray will have more longevity and will continue to do business after C&L tapers off. That's my prediction, anyway.

'Longevity!' There's the word I've been searching for.

Please don't hate us here in middle America. I just saw the film here in Bardstown, KY and theater was at least 1/3 full--pretty good for a smalltown at 12:10 on a Friday afternoon.
Chuck & Larry will kill at the box office... i think it looks ridiculously stupid and i have no desire to see it, but Adam Sandler can open any film with a minimum of $35 million easy.
I think it will open huge. unfortunately.
Hairspray has a good shot to do pretty well, but it will in no way come close to C&L. I'd say between 20 - 25 mil. but that may even be shooting a bit high. i dunno...
Normally, I agree with the Sandler statement, but I think this will be one of his weaker openings, at least I hope so. I've not read one good review yet, not that that keeps sandler fans away, but it certainly doesn't help.
But also, the problem with this movie is it's subject matter: too straight for gays, too gay for straights. I don't think people will flock to this film. It seems to be offending everyone, except GLAAD for some reason. of course, I may be wrong, but I hope not.
"I'm an American, Damnit!!! And if it's three things I don't believe in, it's quitting and math."
If it's any indication (and I'm not sure it is) but Hairspray is blowing doors over HP5 and Chuck & Larry on Moviefone.com's front page. These are views of movie pages which one could assume is people checking for tickets.

Hairspray (2007) 111,201 Views Chuck & Larry 39,076 Views Harry Potter 35,074 Views Transformers 16,090 Views Sunshine 14,783 Views
wouldnt that be great if the box office line up was exactly that. :)

The difference between C&L and HAIRSPRAY is that HAIRSPRAY will be getting multiple viewings from a lot of it's audience. Also, remember that LITTLE NICKY did not pull in the same amount of money as his usual, and that was at the hight of his popularity.
