Coney Island#1

Hello all. Arrive in New York tomorrow.
My traveling companion wants to go to Coney Island, and I am trying to work out the details but can not find all the info I need on line.
We are staying in Chelsea, is it a difficult trip to get from there to Coney Island? What is the best way to go (Subway, etc.)
According to one site Coney Island is free, but the rides are individually priced. About how much each ride?

Thanks for your help in advance.

From Chelsea, you can take the A, C, or E from 23rd St. to 4th St. (Washington Square), transfer to the D and ride it all the way to the end to Coney Island. There are actually a couple of small independently owned "parks" with different prices. Astroland is the most famous. You can get an all-day ticket or individual ride tickets.

You should definitely still go there-have a snack at Nathans-but don't be surprised at the degredation. The place is ready to be torn down, and is pretty depressing.

There are still plenty of colorful stands and rides, and tons of people watching to do. See it now before it's gone!

I thought there was a project underway to rebuild Coney Island. I remember seeing the renderings. What happened to that?

"I thought there was a project underway to rebuild Coney Island. I remember seeing the renderings. What happened to that?"

I also heard that it was to be rebuilt. Then I heard to the contrary, and that the two structures which must remain are the cyclone and that parachute ride. They're historical monuments now.

Who knows? All I know is that it looks really bad now.
