She'd be absolutely phenomenal.

Christine Andreas? F*ck no. I'm getting nauseous at the thought of seeing her as Margaret on Sunday. Back on topic, these are my top choices for Rose:

Lorna Luft, Vicki Clark, Beth Leavel, Christine Ebersole.

boy is fame fleeting, 6 pages, and not one nomination of Idina Menzel.

Quick aside: Tyne Daly was so incredibly awesome when I saw her in D.C. just before moving to Broadway. Even today, that is the #1 performance of a musical I have ever seen.

On to the nominations game: I am most intrigued by Bebe Neuwirth. That controlled voice and tempo in speaking would make Everythings Coming Up Roses really explosive in contrast - if she can explode it out. Out of context, it's such a happy song. In Tyne's hands (and Midler's) it became scary - the expression of emotional dominance with the dread of what Rose is going to do to Louise with Rose's dream.

Cyndi Lauper would be a perfect choice for Mamma Rose for the big screen.

That's too funny, Dollypop.

I was thinking Ann-Margret, or Annette Funicello.

I think Stephanie J. Block would be great in 15 years. Could Patti Cohenour do it? I love her, but I'm not sure if she's the right type for Rose.

in maybe about 25-30 years I think Sutton Foster would be a great momma rose. I think she has the voicce for it and it would be great when she is old enough!

Not really a Broadway diva, but seriously, Meryl Streep. If it's a one night only concert, a benefit, or anything, I am DYING to see what she would do with this role. From what I've heard, her voice isn't as big as the role requires, but that's why Joan Lader exists.

I love the idea of Tonya Pinkins.

BUMP...

And, this is an idea that should have happened:

Dorothy Loudon as Rose. She could nail that comedy in her sleep and anyone with any doubts toward the dramatic end of the acting needs only look at Ballroom.

There is a Youtube of Andrea McArdle as Rose in a regional production. She has the voice for it but way too young.

Totally into Tonya Pinkins as Rose. I got chills just thinking about her singing "Rose's Turn."

I remember when Peters was doing it, I was taking one of Steve Nelson's (he's on the Broadway PBS miniseries documentary. He's brilliant when it comes to musicals) classes at NYU, and he said he thought no one was out there at the time who could play Mama Rose and do her justice. Someone mentioned Alix Korey and he then said something like, "Okay, no one except Alix Korey." I'd love to see her in the part. She'd rip it up.

I could also see Henshall being good.

I would rather see Mary Bond Davis as Rose than Tonya Pinkins (and I do love her).

Saw this:

today and automatically came back to BWW to search for a thread like this to nominate Lea. I had only seen her in concert versions and never seen her move and "act" out a song in costume.

She would be phenom.

Mary Testa, definitely. She's got the pipes and she can act the Hell out of it.

I was lucky enough to play opposite her a million years ago and it would be a dream of mine to play her Herbie. But, of course, I have a better chance of winning the lottery...

Patty Duke...
She played it in Washington a few years back and she received very good reviews...
I even heard a rumor that she was to replace Ms. Peters but the production closed....
