I realize that Patti LuPone is scheduled to do all performances of "Gypsy" at City Center and I would assume that she is intending on doing them all (especially with the production's limited run). Just trying to gauge opinion here before purchasing tickets: do you think it's likely that she might start missing matinees because of the demands of the role?
It is looking like a Wednesday matinee might be the best time for me to see it and I'm just fearful of making the trip only to find a notice that Patti is out.
She's not even doing a full month of performances (I didn't evne realize they were doing matinees!). Not only is Patti from the school of "my name's above the title, I refuse to miss a show," but as Munk said, she's a pro.
Plus, none of the other Mamma's had a matinee double, did they?
Why wouldn't she? It's a limited run, and hasn't she wanted to play this role for a long time? I don't know why she would miss matinees.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Alison Fraser is covering Rose in addition to playing Tessie Tura, but don't count on her ever going on.
Patti's going to be there for every performance.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
Patti isn't known for missing performances. And I'm sure she'll be especially careful about not missing any of these because it's so centered around her, it's such a short run, and she's been dying to play the role for ages.
She'll be there for every performance that she possibly can (excluding the performances the final weekend that have already been canceled)

She'll be there unless she..oh, I don't know...breaks her back again. But even if she does break her back, I think she should go on...I mean, she wouldn't want to be bashed on BWW or anything.
According to the press release, the San Francisco Symphony's summer concert series wasn't announced until mid-May. Anyone know why LuPone would fly across the country to give a concert rather than play a full set of shows for the final weekend of Gypsy. What if her flight is delayed or something and she can't get back in time for the closing performance.
I don't think City Center even casts understudies.
A standby has been hired for Benanti.

I think that the beloved philanthropist and humanitarian, Mr. Arthur Laurents will make sure, besides Patti not missing any shows, that Ms. Benanti will not break her back and miss a few shows.
I don't know who is standing by for Ms. B. but it has been confirmed by a reliable source on this board that a standby was hired for her.
(Not to mention, duh)

Rathnait, how can you say that Mama Rose is not a difficult part? It is one of the most demanding roles in musical theatre. Having said that, I respect all of the posters that say there is no way she will miss matinees.
