Me and a friend of mine are coming to NYC for 4th of July. However, he told me that Color Purple and a few other shows didn't have shows on the 5th. Does anyone know if shows are closed on 4th of July or after?

What ItsCalledHistory said. I was about to post the same thing.

The Color Purple IS playing on the 5th but not the 4th.

In fact, the only show NOT playing on the 5th is The Year of Magical Thinking which is dark that entire week until the 10th.

Broadway is never closed. You're always allowed to walk down the street.

I was going to make a snarky comment like that, jv, but you beat me to it re: Is it true Broadway is closed on the 5th

For future reference, when there is a major holiday the week of performances, shows either play on that holiday or can add an extra performance on another day and not perform on the holiday. It all depends upon the show. Broadway is never actually closed on a certain date. The only time that Broadway can be "closed" is when there is a strike going on. That happened a few years ago.

I saw two shows on July 4th, in 2001.

I saw "BLAST" in the afternoon, appropriately enough, and in the evening, I saw FOSSE with Ben Vereen and Ann Reinking.

Millie ~ I'm pretty sure that everything was dark on Christmas. I can't remember 100%, but I don't think anything ran that day.

Christmas Eve is usually dark. I saw Hairspray on X-mas in 2002. Some of the solo shows did play X-mas eve, though

I was being a little snarky, but Broadway's always open.
