I just realized my post may have come across this way, so I just want to clarify:

I definitely didn't mean to say it like "well, they're talented for their ages" because thats kind of a cop-out. I more just meant that its really exiting to me because they ARE so good, to think that they'll probably only become BETTER :) But I mean, I say that starting out on the basis that I LOVE them as actors now. Especially the guys in the show, but I really do love Lea as an actress. Again, I thought her Whispering and the scene just before it were particularly incredible.

Jon Wright is wonderful :) He's SO ridiculously good at being COMPLETELY deadpan and its fantastic. He has SUCH a good voice too!

i love Jon Wrights voice, so deep... so cute... lol.

i think one of the major things about any posts is that people will always have strong opinions about something they really in to. so its really a useless waste of time to fight with someone who has their own opinions but its just a vicious cycle.

IMO i cant compare RENT to SA. There are so many difference and so little similarities.

Lea Michele has an incrediable voice IMO... no matter if she has a high voice in person or not, her character is 14 years old. if she was playing a 5 year she would need a much more high pitched voice. we have to have some common sense here. most girls at 14 have high pitched voices. i dont think that this is a problem here or something to argue about.

Some people will love SA and some wont thats obvious but like i said its useless to fight with people about their own opinions.

No, Bdwy24 I was not one of those girls laughing. I was really silent for the intire performance. I really think that it low to imply that just because I didn't like the show that I would ruin it for the other people around me who paid $100 for their tickets.

Oops! my bad. So she's 20 not 22, big dif. I still felt she was "acting" 14 instead of being 14. Just my opinion. And 20 isn't that much younger than 22. I could have sworn I read somewhere she was 22, because I laughed when I read the cast bios since she was the only one making a point about her age. No one else put down their age. I'll try to find the article, cuz I read it awhile back. If that is her natural voice, fine. I guess it was her inflections then, because she was sooo affected. The comment about "musical theater dialect", what!!!???? You mean "General American"? I graduated with a Musical Theater degree and never had a class on "Musical Theater dialect". So I'm intrigued, I'd like to more know about this dialect...I was simply told to speak clearly with good diction and proper projection. I'm sorry I don't like her work, you all seem to be big fans of hers, and that's great, but for those of us who don't like her work, don't attack us for having a seperate opinion. Thanks:)

I think that what brainpolice23 was trying to get at was simply that... there does seem to be a difference between musical theater acting and straight theater acting. I'm no expert, but it just appears that way to me as well. I doubt that its anything thats *taught*, but rather something thats just kind of picked up by nature of the differences in the types of theater. I'm really not sure how to describe it- all I can say is, I too see a difference in lea's acting in comparison with john gallagher's acting. John's is very real- very straight. Lea's is a little bit more... theatrical I guess. And acting in that way isn't necasserily a bad thing- for example, I happen to love Idina Menzel in wicked (as I'm sure many people on the board know by now haha), and think she's a brilliant actress. But that said, her acting is definitely very musical theater inclined. Lea's the same way. There's a certain sing-songy-ness to their acting. And it doesn't make it bad, its just a style.

wow, I'm rambling SO much here, and I cant even descibe it well enough to effectively make my point haha. But... I hope that was at least somewhat comprehensable :)

There's really no such thing as musical theatre acting. It's just acting. Sometimes you sing and dance when you do it, but it's all acting, and I don't think Lea is a "musical theater" actress, she's just less of an actress than some of the others. Less trained in acting. A singer who acts, if you will.

I strongly disagree with the statement that Idina Menzel's acting is "musical theater inclined." Whatever THAT means.

just for the record, I really truly did not mean ANYTHING against idina whatsoever- she's one of my very favorite actresses, and again, I think she's brilliant

I really have no idea how to say what I've been trying to say, so I'll stop for now, but its just.. I dont know, I do feel like there's a little bit of a difference. Again, I am no expert in it, and I'm strictly going based on how I happened to view different performances I've seen. I'll just leave it at that I definitely dont feel either way is BAD, and I didn't mean to imply that what I view as more "straight" acting is better :) It all just depends on the show and the role and all that stuff.
