Is it just me, or are too many people thinking that they know Broadway because they "love" wicked or rent. I just recently signed up and this is my first message, but I fell like it is a disgrace to theater. Also is "High School Musical a real reason to get into theater, NO. Many of my friends think so. If you suspect a person is not a true theater person, just ask if they have heard of Stephen Sondheim, sorry bout spelling, or Andrew Lloyd Weber. It is funny if a person pretends to be theater and isn't.

Are we talking about architect Frank Lloyd Wright?
I am sorry, but this seems to be INCREDIBLY hypocritical.
I am glad that there are shows like Wicked and Rent and even...yes, even High School Musical, to interest youth in theatre and broadway. Sure, they aren't the best and most intelligent shows of all time, but they are a door that leads to a future love. I went through a period where I really loved Wicked.
But, is this a joke?
...What happened next, was stranger still, a woman breathless and afraid, appeared out of the night, completely dressed in white. She had a secret she would tell, of one who had mistreated her. Her face and frightened gaze, my mind cannot erase...But then she ran from view. She looked so much like you...

Apparently you are not a "true theature (sic) person" either.
These are rather bold assertions to make on your first day on BWW.
This has to be a sock puppet..... please be a sock puppet.
"You just can't win. Ever. Look at the bright side, at least you are not stuck in First Wives Club: The Musical. That would really suck. "

whether or not it is theatre is subjective. it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but at least kids that are drawn to these types of shows are STILL supporting thier idea of what theatre is.
it's still better for them to spend money on a show over and over, rather than going to see "Superman" or other films over and over.
to summarize: to each his own, whatever floats one's boat.
"I'm an American, Damnit!!! And if it's three things I don't believe in, it's quitting and math."
Andrew Lloyd Wright wrote some of the tackiest musicals, but boy what an architect!!

oh my god, I can see this thread lasting a whole year.

Matt, Often when we take up a new passion, we become very interested in who is a "real" fan or not. It's not just Broadway- listen to a group of shorties argue what Hip hop is or Hip Hop ain't. But no matter what the subject ends up being, the discussion is an ugly one. Arguing about which musicals are too popular or why people who only like "Rent" are Posers only makes you look young and foolish-- and yes, we are all young and foolish from time to time, but there's no reason to trumpet the fact. So you're free to ignore this advice, but try to let go of what other people are doing and saying and just enjoy your new found passion. Learn about Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber-- Hell, learn about Frank Lloyd Wright, too-- and enjoy yourself. Personally I'm envious that you might still hear "Merrily We Roll Along" for the first time and get that tingle up the back of your neck that I first felt 25 years ago. Don't worry about who's a true theater person. Just enjoy.
