I heard from a friend said that Oliver Stone wants to make "Miss Saigon" his next movie. Has anybody else heard this? I think this would be a great movie however I think the man who directed "Chicago" (Rob Marshall) would be better.

hmm don't know about that... but i think i read that Cameron Macintosh says that Miss Saigon has the potential to be a really good movie because it's so cinematic... in fact, that's what i love about the original staging... how everything on the sets seemlesly come together... but i would definitely love to see this filmed but i'm kinda scared because i'm afraid they'll mess it up big time... i'd rather they just release a staged version of it...

It's far too early to speculate.

It does sound like good movie material. It could even be a good movie without the musical score.

Oliver Stone will probably focus on the Vietnam War and work the plot around its impact on the lives of the various characters in the show - just guessing re: Miss Saigon Movie rumors??

mmm...I like the idea. This and Ragtime both would transfer effortlessly to the screen.

eatlasagna - I agree...they may even cast the wrong actors and omit some songs. The last performance on Broadway was recorded for archival purposes. They either mass produce that for commercial release, which will never happen, or revive it like Les Miz on Broadway....but not too soon. Tour is still very much alive, UK, Australia, and now Korea? Is there another musical production that has been staged many times in so many countries around the world?

I even enjoyed a little touring production that came thru Baltimore about two years ago. Maybe three....

I think it would be a great show to do as a movie.

AND i second RAGTIME... I mean you really could do it. It would totally work as a movie. I do like the original movie but the new one would be AMAZING!

stanton, if you mean the tape for archival purposes, yes, you can see it only if you are a theater teacher or student, and with ID, you can only borrow the video and watch it through the library's video machine (either Carnegie or the Met library...can't rem.) If you mean the "Making" video, you can still get the VHS or DVD online.

Let's see...The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miz, Mamma Mia and Cats, just to name a few.

I would die if a film version of Ragtime were released.
But, on topic, I don't know much about Miss Saigon...but would they try to get Lea Salonga back in it?

I actually have always thought that MISS SAIGON would make a better film than stage musical. I have no idea if the rumours about Oliver Stone are true or not, but he did say in a recent interview that he very much regrets not directing EVITA - so perhaps the SAIGON rumour has some validity.

At any rate, I'm sure Lea Salonga, if she were in the film, would have moved up to Gigi. No way she could pass for 17 on film unless they used the same cause on the lens they used for Lucy in MAME.

Can anyone confirm these rumors from any other sources than a "friend?"

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

My guess is they would have big names as Chris (especially), Ellen and most likely Gigi (some big voiced star cameo). I can definately see them getting an unknown for Kim; unless Zhang Ziyi knows how to sing. And well.

Maybe Lea could still pass for Kim - if they start the movie with her as the mother of a 6-8 year old son -- and then work the flashback to the point when she was a young lass about to join the bar ladies in Saigon.

Her voice hasn't aged though - it still has that crystal clear clarity and sweetness!

Of course she is practically a non-entity in Hollywood ( she has only sang, not appeared, in some Disney movies...although she did sing at the Oscars once) - but nobody ever heard of Emmy Rossum before THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.

Whatever they do, I hope they keep the part away from Dakota Fanning.

I love that idea. Have them start off with her on the way to meet up with her former lover! Wow! By the way isn't that her singing in the Aladdin movie?

I recently downloaded "I Still Believe" from the Bway and London casts, and the song has sparked my interest in the show. I would like to see a movie of Miss Saigon.

Yeah and look at how many tickets Emmy Rossum sold... re: Miss Saigon Movie rumors??

I love Lea, but she looks like she is in her mid thirties now. I'm pretty sure they would cast an unknown as Kim and get interesting people for Chris, The Engineer, etc.

Yes, she sang A BRAVE NEW WORLD from Aladdin at the Oscars. And if I remember right, she has also sang the part of Mulan ( not sure, but was this the one where she did voiceovers along with Harvey Fierstein?) and also the lead in the Disney movie about a dog (can't remember the name, sorry re: Miss Saigon Movie rumors??)
