So I forced my bigot boyfriend to see Purlie. He didn't want to because he hates Black people but I told him this was a great show and would he just see it for my sake. Well he loves me so much that he agreed! And guess what! He loved the show! He thought it was fabulous! Mind you he still hates black people but he hasn't stopped singing Walk Him Up the Stairs since we came home!
Ah, the magic of theatre.

I do my best.
In all seriousness, my late (though not great) grandmother had an irrational hatred for all people Hispanic (or even those she suspected were Hispanic). She had a "lovely" variation on the common pejorative for them that I won't repeat here. If only I'd taken her to see West Side Story, perhaps she'd have changed her tune.
