Idina owns the role! I don't care if SJB had first crack at it, she always was screaming parts of her songs, and that annoyed me beyond anything else. I love Eden and Sho but Ana Gasteyer brings a little more acting muscle to the role and that is why is 2nd

Not a chance. Her work in "RENT," "Josie and the Pussycats" and "Two Gentlemen of Verona" shows no indication that she has the vocal range or power to sustain that role.
Hell, I'm a belter and there's no way that I could pull off Elphaba. It's extremely vocally challenging. Just because Rosario has a nice voice does not mean that she can properly hit the notes called for 8 shows a week.

Listen to the end of "Goodbye Love" on the Rent movie recording. When she belts out "goodbye love" full force, you can tell that she does have a powerful voice.
actor, I so hate to disappoint you, but Dawson's voice was almost completely digitally enhanced for the movie of RENT. She really is not much of a singer, and those of us who saw her sing live in TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA can attest to that. She could never sing Elphaba live. Ever.
That said, they could probably digitize her enough to do the movie Updated On: 10/31/06 at 05:50 PM
I haven't seen her live, so I don't know if she really has a good voice. From the way it sounded on the movie recording of Rent, it sounded like she could. But again, I haven't seen her live so I don't know.
Powerful voice or not, Elphaba has some very high notes to belt out. I just don't think that Rosario has proven that she has a high enough range to pull it off.

Stephanie J. Block, without a doubt. I was amazed and touched by her performance and will never forget it. Fabulous acting, amazing versatile voice, and she just owned the stage. Plus she's the sweetest person ever!

The choosing was not...

yeah.. about the whole Rosario thing.. I ADORE her, I really really do. I think she is unbelievably talented and gorgeous and a better mimi couldn't have been found for the movie. BUT- broadway... ehh, I dont know, I just think it might be a little too.. big for her. She's just too much of a screen actress... what makes her so amazing is all the LITTLE stuff she does, and the fact that she's NOT overdramatic or anything (not to say anyone in the RENT movie cast was overdramatic, because clearly I love them all to death). Especially for a part like elphaba.. she'd just kind of get lost on the stage I think. All the spark she has on screen would kind of be gone. Elphaba needs to be played by people like idina, and eden too, who just seem to feel the most at home on stage, and light up the stage as much as rosario lights up the screen :P Its just two very different mediums
oh, and as far as the singing goes, I'm.. not really sure. She has an absolutely GORGEOUS voice, but I just dont think its trained enough to belt THAT much for THAT many shows a week. She can def let it rip in a recording studio, but its totally different doing it 8 times a week in a theater. There's a reason the vast majority of broadway people have had at the VERY least SOME training to purposes of learning how to mantain their voice, and most of them have had a lot MORE than that
and have I mentioned Idina's my favorite elphaba? :P hehe
I don't need a life that's normal. That's way too far away. But something next to normal would be okay. Something next to normal is what I'd like to try. Close enough to normal to get by.
I've seen Idina and Shoshana. Idina, hands down. Idina showed much more vulnerability, Shoshana's acting was all "surface." I know that probably doesn't make sense to anyone but me, but that's my reasoning.
After seeing her (finally) I have to say Idina. Every time I've seen her she's been fantastic. Obviously time away from the role has meant her voice is back to brilliant and she really puts her heart into it.
Looking forward to next time I go, but also to seeing the next Elphaba.
Idina Overall of course. But.....Jenna did the end of defying gravity the best. On the "I'm flying high DeFYing gravity", she was the only elphaba whose "FY" syllable came out clear and didn't sound forced or pinched. go jenna :) wish she'd open as elphie somewhere.
